USB mass storage device is all that it sees. Any current USB drive will work just fine.

Thanks for the comments. I will be getting a new ipod but I am working on BMW to pay for it as I was reckon I was mis sold the USB option. I'll let you know. The 120d Coupe is a great drive and pretty quick. Has the same performance as my previous Maxda RX8 and with better fuel economy than the 118d hatchback I had prior to this coupe

I didn't have it on order at first but I did add it on before my production started. I heard the ability to put music on a usb flash drive is really cool. I normally would replace the radio, but i have know clue when a dash kit will be made available. The 3 series still doesn't have one.

I have a 2008 535i with a USB connector and at first I thought it was tits. Now, I just burn CDs. Why? I don't like taking my iPod in and out everytime I go somewhere. I can leave the CDs in the car, even on hot days. CDs are cheap, hold a lot of songs, and sound good. Unless your really int listening to pod casts, burn a few CDs and leave the iPod at home.

Thats why I bought a dedicated ipod classic for my car. (costco rebate check) I was going to go with a hard drive, but I wanted an ipod so I could pull it out of my car and have all my music ready to utilize on anybody's ipod compatible stereo.

Does the ipod option work if you don't get the idrive? Where do the song titles come up and do the steering wheel controls still work the same way?

Just to say that BMW has bought me a new ipod classic following their assertion that all ipods worked with their usb connection when my 3rd generation ipod didnt. So I am one satisfied customer !! And the 120d coupe is still a great drive!

I'm pretty sure that the 6FL option doesn't even know that you have an iPod inserted. It just sees it as a mass storage device with songs on it. It plays all of the iPod's formats natively, including MP3s. This would make sense, since it is supposed to allow playback from most MP3 players.

Edit: I found more info about this, that I thought warranted another thread.

There is a set-up on e90 that hooks up a USB powered hard-drive with 80G of storage to the 6FL option, and all the song/artist/albumn info show up on the NAVI screen. No alterations were done to the car, just hooked up the hard-drive, stuck it in the pocket in the center console, and that's it.
