My only question about Nav is whether it will take just 5 years, or a whole 10 years for it be become as obsolete as the car phone, 8-track deck, and cassette tape stereos.

+1, Absofriggenlutely. I accept that it's not for everyone, but I dig it.

i would never spend the 2100 on BMW's nav. i had the chance to really get hands on with it and it was just plain lame. no offense to any BMW owners out there with NAV. If you have ever had the chance to toy around Honda/Acura's NAV then anything else would seem prehistoric.

I went fully loaded, what's $2100 more really matter

Looking back I could have done without it, but hey you only live once. I think the Dinan reflash is overpriced, and would pursue a cheaper reflash like juicebox and also have cash to upgrade the exhaust or the popular "hookers and blow".

I've had reflashes on other cars and not had a problem, the Dinan reflash only admits to your dealer that you are modding the car. Are you going to Dinan reflash and then buy an AA exhaust? Unless that reflash is your ONLY mod, I can't see it being that worth it. Esp. when the Turbotuner and jiucebox can be installed/removed in a small matter of time and make similar power.

My .02 since there was such a movement to the Dinan being the money smart decision to make in lieu of the Nav.

$2k is about what everyone charges for factory nav. It used to be a bling-blingy thing to have, but is very mainstream now. Pretty soon you'll probably start seeing it as standard equipment on normal everyday type cars, just like a CD player or whatever.

I am thinking I would rather have a Pioneer AVIC Z2 In Dash instead or maybe 20% tint and a set of tires to do burnouts with

For years before nav systems were around I had no problems finding my way using a $5 map. I'd never buy an OEM nav system with a car, they're all quite overpriced. These are suitable for those of us who are more concerned with bling than being a driver.

What about the new BMW Portable Nav. system?
It's acually a Garmin and only a 3.5" screen, but portable.
There's one on evilbay (not mine) right now.

Where do you guys go so often that you have absolutely no idea how to get there? For me, I drive a pretty routine route. On weekends, I go places that I may not know the directions, but I have a good sense of the area in surrounding cities and districts.. I would love to own a navi unit, but with $2100.00, I would be looking at a custom carputer with gps, dvd, wifi, and the works.. Unfortunately I am not ballsy enough to do custom work on the 1er as I was if I ended up with an S2000. Plus, mounting location on the 1er doesn't appeal very much to me unless we had the popup storage bin where the oem navi goes. Even then, it wouldn't be a very functional touch screen as it looks incredibly far for the driver to reach up to touch.

BMW's nav system is not only overpriced, but it's not exactly known for it's ease of use & design. Except for the fact that the factory system is nicely intigrated into the dash, you would be way better off with a $300 Garmin IMHO.

The other consideration is having to deal with i-drive along with the nav system. I know a lot of people who would still pass on the nav even if it was priced cheaply!
By oem goodness, I meant that clean look with perfect color matched panels and buttons.. Seamlessly integrated into the cars functionality and interior. mmmm......

For me it was more than just the nav.

Portable navs that work in europe and the US are expensive, and I'm doing ED.

Logic 7.

True iPod integration.

The potential to haxxors the iDrive screen to work like the data gagues in the R35! :-D

The ipod integration with the standard stereo is essentially true integration, and logic 7 has not been confirmed for the us w/ nav. I actually think (I'm not 100%) that one of the moderators got confirmation in Chicago that there will be no logic 7 in the US.

The built in nav is definitely nice. I decided against it, because I don't like the look of it on the dash. I prefer the 3-series placement. It will also look very dated in a few years, I tend to keep a car for 5+ years. (I couldn't imagine sporting the factory nav in my 2000 E46 today)

The other factor was that 99% of my driving would not utilize the nav. I'm going to pick up a tomtom for road trips, and put the money saved to performance mods.

Im not going to deny that OEM Navs are overpriced. Its not like idrive is the only nav for 2k. Even Scion is 2k, so its the going rate.
You get alot more then just nav like you get in aftermarket units. I like how it integrates everything into on point. Plus i like voice commands, and i really like the pop up in the 1er. 1500 would seem fair to me. i mean, you can get a good laptop for 1500. Laptops generally offer more then a nav would so 1500 would be an ok price for idrive. To be honest i dont mind paying the money. ive already decided my next car WILL have nav.
