BMWUSA just called me and asked me about how things went.
I told them just that the system was trying to kill me in the past. Then the airbag died....and off to my local BMW shop i went. But now WOW! Oh yeah the car is running perfectly and I actually trust the GPS. I told them that if they wished for happy customers to update all of our Idirves |

Any tips on how to corrupt my GPS/airbag so I can get the same update for free? LOL

Brother I have no idea! but BMW USA has called me twice and both times I've told them the same thing. This costs you NOTHING! But what you get in return are happy customers. Please don't be stupid!

They need to be more like Apple. SW/FW support for free + (some) extra features for 3 years down the road, and easy update for the user.

I brought my car in to BMW of Rockville for a few minor issues to take care of, including the GPS. Driving from Frederick, Maryland to DC is usually a no brainer and just drive down on Route 270. Sadly, the GPS would tell me to get off a local exit and re-enter the highway at the next entrance ramp. Huh? I ignored it & sure enough, it tells me to get off the next exit and then re-enter at the very next ramp to the highway.
I told the service advisor the story. He said $425 to do the update ($135 for labor and $290 for the part). I asked him to just wipe out the software and re-install the older version. Much like wiping out your Mac's software and re-installing it. Nope, can't do. For $425, I might as well buy two Garmins and get free updates included. What a travesty. My wife's Lexus RX350's navigation system is a beauty. Very elegant and I especially like the way it allows you to save the destination as a name of your own choosing. I can't do that with the BMW system. I can only recall previous destinations and then have to figure out which address to use. Who designed this system, seriously? Plus, if you want to scroll further on the map without increasing/decreasing the size/mileage, you can't do that. With the Lexus, I just simply move the knob like a joystick and the map moves to wherever I want to go. Nice. Oh well. Even the colors are vivid and meaningful. |

Update
Funny. I just got a call from the service manager, asking me to come back and they will install the upgrade to the Navigation system. Nice to know. Still, the system is nowhere as good as the Lexus system. Just my two cents.

I think BMW Nav peaked with the MkIV unit found in the later E46s, E39s, E53s, and such. Very simple, but lightening fast and accurate. It was this magical combination of enough power to have all the function you want, but limited enough that they couldn't bog it down with BS.
The guys over on XOutpost(X5 forum) have hacked it as well, and have added/unlocked a number of very useful features. One of my favorites is the integration of the Trapster database into the Nav, with full alerts/images.

I complained a day after I got my car and the dealer said they would give me a free update when it came out. I have a 2009 and got the update in 2011. At least now it does not show that I have gas station in my back yard. I thought my Mercedes GPS was bad.
