Stock Radio randomly shuts off on it's own. Anyone else?
I bought my car new about 5 months ago and my radio has shut off twice on it own. Both times it made a loud pop and came back on in about 15 or 20 seconds. I don't have the upgraded system just the base one. The first time I assumed that the amp went into protect from heat or something. The second time I had only been driving for 5 minutes with the volume low but this time I realized that the radio shut off so now I assume it is possibly a faulty head unit. I was talking with another forum member that is experiencing the same issue and has an '11 135i as well.
I haven't taken it to the dealer yet but on my next service I will bring it up. Since it's so random when it happens it's going to be next to impossible to duplicate at the dealership unless it get much worse. Has anyone else experienced this with their stereo? |

Something funky happened to mine last Saturday. I was using the USB for my mP3 player. It was a 65 degree day...nothing special. I pull into a parking lot and my radio display says "HOT." No sound, nothing. I check the inputs and the USB tab is missing. I click it to tuner and no sound. The display was fine after that initial "HOT" warning.
Came back out 90 minutes later and everything has been fine since. Called the dealer and am taking it in next week. Wierd

I've seen this posted before. You need a new radio and coding for it to work in your car. The coding part is the tricky part bc sometimes your dealer might need to update(replace) other hardware in your car's electronic. Just have your dealer check your radio. I would also try and make a video the next time it happens - so you can prove to your dealer that the radio does work from time to time. |

I had a few issues with the radio at first that were solved eventually after a few visits to the dealer. They replaced the radio 1 or 2 times. Changed the battery, reprogrammed the car, etc..., not sure what eventually fixed it ...
I haven't had a radio problem for quite a while, crossing my fingers.

Mine did that the other day to me where the radio randomly shut down. After a few mins it came back up. I think it had to do with the nav dvd that I bought from ebay that was not a genuine nav disc. I swapped back to the factory dvd that came with my 2008 135i and I haven't had any problems since with random shut downs. I guess I just have to suck it up and buy the genuine dvd's from BMW or try to find real discs (not copies) on ebay.

Mine does not shut down once working but does occasionally refuse to work. I need to remember to mention it next visit to the dealer. It has also always worked after the car was shutdown and restarted. It also does not have the aux input as an option when it is acting up. It won't make sound on any input when this happens. It has done this once to twice a year since it was new but did it twice in the last couple months. Maybe it is getting often enough there will be a code for the dealer to find when I bring it in. It also refused to spit a cd back out for a couple months but eventually it would eject.
My 1 is a 2009 so the radio is the mid-level system. I do not have the idrive. Jim

I had that problem also. Unfortunately I took it to the dealer and they did a firmware update. After that I started exhibiting the famous white noise and high pitched whine out of the speaker issue. Six months later with the noise coming and going away (mostly coming), I wished I had never asked the dealer to update the firmware. I would much rather have a momentary loss than the horrible noise and whine that stays for months.

Have you had this issue corrected? It's strange that a newer version of firmware would introduce such a noticeable problem like the one you discussed. My car which is an 08 model has never had the software flashed, it's factory standard, and I have the white noise sound from my speakers as well. I thought they would have fixed this by now :-( |

If your radio fails or does something weird, try unfastening and refastening seat belt. If that fixes it (with a loud chirp through speakers), tell your dealer. There's a SB and SW fix for it.
