LOVE it.

Question though, I always thought they would be $$$ to maintain, no?

Cool car. I always love the shape of those rear quarters, reminds me of a woman's hips. The whale tail is always a plus too.

How is the maintenance and reliability for air cooled engines?

Nowadays smart money goes to the Carrera models of 1983 (I think) to 1989. Congrats on the car, its gorgeous and these cars are generally best kept stock except for updated Porsche parts (chain tensioners come to mind). Also I recommend joining PCA.
'84 to '88 is the 3.2 Carrera like I have. '83 would still be the SC and '89 would be the first year of the 964, which had an engine that was unsealed from the factory. Basically necessitates a reseal right away. Chain tensioners are an upgrade to the SC that originated from this model.

Already a member of the PCA, they have the best track days.

If you buy a good one that has been properly garaged and taken care of, it really doesn't cost much more than a 128i to maintain.

Highly labor intensive things like fixing rust and trashed engines from poor maintenance/crap driving will cost you.

Absolutely rock solid in the SC and 3.2 Carreras. They used the the turbo block with the turbos removed, so they are quite understressed from the factory. Maintenance is your normal fluid changes(though 13.5 quarts of oil), valve adjustments, and engine fan belt checking. Think of it like a pre-flight check list.

With proper fluid changes and such, people usually go ~300k before a rebuild.

Sweet jesus! 13.5 quarts. I thought 7 quarts in our 3.0's was a lot

Then again, the more oil the longer it has to lose some heat before it gets recirculated.

I wasn't planning on doing this so soon, but with classic car/air-cooled 911 market going through the roof, I felt like I had to get on it before the opportunity got away(1015, get on this before the market gets completely away). Long story short, my years of eying up the market turned into only two weeks of searching, and resulted in finding a really nice example of what I wanted.

The end result was a 1985 3.2 Carrera coupe. My perfect blend of unassisted steering, unassisted clutch, no ABS, no traction control, a wonderfully fiddly transmission, and mechanical everything. The steering is immediate and unbelievably feelsome, the shifter works at it own speed, the engine grumbles about everything, the car feels rock solid despite weighing ~2500lbs, cable drive throttle and clutch are perfection, the view is excellent and you can see what every part of the car is doing at all times.

It is the most fundamentally different driving experience I have ever had. Nothing relates in the slightest.

I'm never selling this car.

Few shots around the car:

Safely arrived home via the trailer. I saw no reason to subject it to driving through New York city and general highway awfulness. Plus, I want to give a thorough once over before I go on a 4 hour trip.

Yes, even at 6'5" I fit fine. I do have a steering wheel spacer on the way though to bring it up off the dash. And eventually I will probably swap it to the Momo Protipo.

Beautiful, congrats on the 911! Classic all the way!

+1. Yup.

A good friend of mine has a '86 930S flacht bau(slope nose). It's a factory slope nose car(all metal) and it's wonderful. I think the price back in the day was close to $170K. It's a rare bird. My buddy calls "it" his white elephant, jokingly. It's a very rare car.

The guy he bought it from bought a even rarer 911. He got a 965 Turbo S2 slope nose. This was the last air-cooled turbo before the 993TT. It had 928-like headlights with a slope nose from the factory AND it had 959-like air intakes in/on top of the rear quarter flares. I forget how much power it had from the factor but I want to say 460 HP. I remember it had more power than the AWD 993TT did(400 HP) back then.

Really Nice car! It's pretty. I am in the market for a 911 Targa (because I like shit without roofs).

You're right about the market. I couldn't believe how it's gone up in the last 3 years. I should have bought one when nobody wanted them.

Targas are easily the most prevalent(and usually 10% cheaper), so you should have pretty good variety to pick from. Just factor in the cost of replacing the seals as most of them are shot.

Jump on it! 964/993's are turning into investments, and will be absurdly priced in 5 years.

Everything is currently getting pushed through the roof. 964s have stayed the most stable. 993s by virtue of being the last ones made are up to $35k-$50k for a standard Carrera. SCs and 3.2 Carreras are up 50% from two years ago. Even the mid years are getting close to SC pricing.

People always say they are "air cooled" engines. They are actually "oil cooled" engines.

Congrats Stig, she's beautiful. I keep telling my boss, now is the time to buy one before they're too expensive. He's closing in on 60 years old, kids are out of college, but he just won't pull the trigger. Of course I just want it to happen so I can drive it.
