MPG indicator?
Hi guys,
I test drove a 6spd 328i this weekend as there are no manual 1s anywhere in my area and I noticed that there was this MPG indicator at the bottom of the tachometer which I thought was super cool... Does the one have the same thing or is it digital? If anyone has a manual car that can chip in I would appreciate it! |

You can get it to display this on the digital readout between the speedo and the tach ..

The analog mpg indicator below the 3 series tach is an instantaneous reading - similar to the old vaccuum gauges. It is not available on the 1 series which (like the 3) has a cumulative mpg readout as part of the on board computer.

Actually I think you can do this with the 1 series .. There is the one you are talking about and then you can cycle to where it changes depending on how hard you are driving ... I can watch it change between mpg as I am driving .... Crowley

This is true. The 1 will show you "instant" MPG by toggling through the options.

So there's now an instantaneous setting on the OBC? Neat - but bmrgrl still won't get to watch the crazy analog needle do it's dance. Ah, progress....

Just to verify by bringing this one back from the dead... the OBC for, say, a 135i will show an instantaneous and an average MPG readout, depending upon the setting it is on? Searching for "instantaneous MPG" brought me here.
Thanks! |

Yep. You get both. You can't see them at the same time, but they're both there. You can also reset the average independently of the trip OD. I find that useful for logging mileage over an entire road trip, while checking each tank manually. Excellent work with the search button BTW! |

like most i also have the manual, but i dont' think that matters to your question
yes, there are 2 modes for the MPG. 1. instantaneous 2. average ive found it useful too -- it isn't 100% accurate, but id say accurage to within 5-10% which is close enough for me.

Not as nice as the dial traditionally found, I would think. My wife's VW has an instant digital readout, and like some folks' comments on digital turbo pressure gauges, it is the same with MPG... too shifty.
But if there was an analog MPG gauge, where would they put the oil temperature gauge??? |

It's actually not too bad. They've smoothed it out just enough for it to be useful. |

And Jeremy's right, the instantaneous mpg readout is quite useful - very readable buffering. Tom |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you display both average MPG and instant MPG simultaneously on the display on the center console?

Yeah but you can pull up the same info on the stereo display at the same time. I just can't remeber how it displays everything (one at a time or all together) |
