With an normal open differential, fitted as standard on most cars, much precious power is wasted through wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip - along the path of least resistance.

The Quaife differential, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has the better grip, and automatically biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel.

In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the unit biases greater power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed.

The Quaife differential also controls loss of traction when the drive wheels are on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow or mud, providing the appropriate biased traction needed to overcome these adverse conditions. Power is transferred automatically without the use of normal friction pads or plates seen in other limited-slip designs.

I have the Nismo mechanical LSD on my Z and frankly it affected the daily-drivability. It's too agressive and clunks like hell!

How is the Quaife compared to that? will it feel like OEM LSD?

I believe the Nosmo LSD is a clutch style and was designed for off-road use only. Althogh great for road racing and drifting, it can be very noisy for street use.

The Quaife is extremely quiet, no clunks or sounds of any sort during operation.

Sorry for all those questions... just wanted to make a couple of things clear..

so, before ordering, we need to make sure we have a bolted diff, right? which cars came with the welded ones? (mine is an 09 Auto M-packaged (non US-spec))

You can always purchase a complete housing with a quaife installed, while your there why not change your ratio to 3.46 for greater acceleration. Ask Harold for details. I have done a few now and it is fantastic with a ratio changes

This is exactly how we did our Quaife upgrade. Complete swap out with an auto diff and the shorter gear ratio (quicker). I feel that this is the best option since the BMW's manual tranny final drive gears are a bit tall, the auto final drive coupled with the manual trans - PERFECT!

It's actually a steal if you compare it to some of the other options out there. I quoted out a custom clutch LSD and it was almost $10K.

It is a steal compare to other more expensive options out on the market.

I've had a Quaife on my 130i before, good product. Now I have a 135i, and considering upgrading this one also. On thing that I'm wondering about is the stock "LSD-function" on the 135i/335i that works through the brakes, (that functions even when you have the DSC/DTC completely turned off.)

- How does the Quaife unit work together with this function and is there a way to turn it off?
