It is not very difficult if you have the right tools.

I used this to press bearings in and out.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I also used this to pull axles back in which made the job even easier but is not necessary.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-bav-auto.../b8800102~bav/

And one of these to press out the axles and pull the hubs out.

https://www.amazon.ca/8milelake-Exte...839386&sr=8-13

There is a thread all about the process

https://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=975919

And by the way I love those wheels.

That's a lot of tools to buy for a one time job. I may just pay a guy. Thanks for the info though.

Valve Cover Leak

My car decided I need to do some more wrenching and sprung a valve cover gasket leak. I started it up for the first time in a while last night and noticed noticed smoke coming from the exhaust manifold area. Saw an obvious leak so now it's time for a new valve cover. After last years turbo swap, oil pan gasket, charge pipe, intercooler, walnut blast , oil catch can and probably some other stuff , this will feel like a walk in the park. Well I hope

How was the job ? Where did you get the valve cover ? I haven't researched much but hoping there is an upgrade out there. I'll be doing mine as soon as it warms up a bit more.

It's URO parts from Rockauto. Replaced the gaskets with Mahle versions. Job was not too bad. Took the centre top section of the firewall off and that made the job much easier.

OFHG gasket done. Apparently it was leaking pretty good once I got to see underneath. Gasket was replaced 30k ago. Also replaced the Vanos Solenoids.

Got to take a peak at the valves as I had the Intake Manifold out. I did have a walnut blast done at about 70k and the car is now at 100k. Looks not too pretty bad.

GM: thanks for all the pics and info. Shocked that your OFHG is so bad again. Did you do it first time? As I'm sure you know, a bad leaking OFHG will leak onto serpentine belt and alternator and cause major and expensive problems.
I picked up a used alternator (E90-same as ours) from Kenny U Pull in Laval. It was absolutely covered in oil (don't know yet if it still works) and my thinking is serp belt broke and caused major engine damage hence car ended up in junk yard.

I didn't do it the first time. The guy who did the Walnut Blast did it at the same time. I rarely let anyone touch my cars. This time when I did it I cleaned everything properly and torqued it to spec. Hopefully this will prevent the same thing from happening again. The 1er is just going to be an occasional car from now on so won't see too many kms. Yeah the belt can get sucked in to the front crank bearing. I will be putting a new belt as well.

My winter project that i have just started on is replacing my oil pan gasket, and the engine mounts while i'm in there. So far dropped the subframe, just waiting on my new extensions to arrive and i will take out the engine mounts then attempt the pan bolts.

The joys of having multiple cars

Used the Princess Auto support last year when I did my turbos and oil pan gasket. Pain in the ass job on jackstands. Pic is near the end of the job with support removed. If anyone is local to Edmonton and ever needs to borrow it your welcome to it. Just taking up room in my garage.

This is as per Stett instructions.

11. Fender liner vents. There are a number of ways you could do this. Wtypically cut a rectangle hole in the liner and call it a day. Rocks generally fling off the rear of the tire, not the front. We have cars running this way for 13 years with not a single issue. Obviously if you live down a gravel road or something unusual like that then obviously it would be ideal to install some coarse mesh on the back side of the liners. It doesn’t have to be fine mesh, we want airflow. You can attach the mesh with some sheetmetal screws, washers and speed clips. Or some machine screws, washers and nuts. You can also cut slits or use a hole saw and cut holes like perforation. No, no
ducts are needed, the fender well is a big duct. And no, those silly “brake ducts” that were on the car (if yours was equipped) did not do a thing, trust me.. we’ve tested it. They serve zero purpose. Yes you can keep your fog lights, we usually remove them for the extra airflow.

CSF Rad installed. Isn't it pretty.

Damn threaded bolt that holds the Intercooler in broke off due to corrosion. Tried to drill it out but was not successful. Trying to come up with an alternate mounting method.

Your alternator, Made in Japan. Never seen that before.

I've read from very good sources the best product for loosening rusty bolts, etc is a 50/50 mixture of acetone and auto transmission fluid.

I was getting an overvoltage issue that was putting the car in to limp mode when running it hard at the track. I was chasing down the issue and ended up replacing the alternator with a rebuilt. Unfortunately I returned the original for a core charge and it turned out not to be the alternator. Thought it was the Intelligent Battery Sensor next but that didn't fix it. Found someone else on the forum who was going down the same road with this issue. He traced it back to faulty coils he purchased at RockAuto. I happened to have the same coils from RockAuto and it appeared that my issues started after the coils.

Needing new coils was all I needed to pull the trigger on the Precision Raceworks coil set. This will pair well with the Pure Stage 2 turbo I have.

Precision Raceworks coils installed. PITA routing harnesses under the coils. Still have to neaten up all the wires snaked over the engine as I will not be able to put back the tray that sits under the engine cover.
