With those figures, 128i still has a slightly better horsepower-to-weight ratio.

First I think if you have the money to be considering a 128i, why not save up some more and get a 135i? But with that said, I am a bit biased in between the two 1ers . When it comes to the MCS and 128, I would choose depending on how I would drive the car and where to drive it to. Personally I prefer the 128 if driving to a professional environment where as the MCS seems more like an enthusiast/boy-racer car. However, the MCS does have the appeal in the handling and exterior iconic style department. Tough choice, perhaps it depends on how much money you have in the piggy bank and what mods, if any, are intended for each car.

I own a r56 mini s, sport package with LSD
the torque steer really pisses me off, and it's the main reason I'm getting rid of the car it does have that go cart feeling and it's great in traffic |

I'm trading in my 2004 MCS for a 135i. I modded the MINI with sway bar, light wheels and non-runflats, brake upgrades, intake, software, pulley, exhaust, throttlebody... the usual 'mild' stuff. It really is a street-legal go-kart -- a very fun car to drive, with a fair amount of power and the best handling you'll ever find on a car below $30k. One of our local MINI owners loves to outperform the Porsches at the local tracks...
The new R56's add a bit more power (especially if you mod them), but I haven't had a chance to put one through its paces in a track/autocross environment. I really think the MINI was a large reason that BMW waited so long to bring the 1 to the States, and still don't offer the hatchback here... they weren't sure the market could bear two hatchbacks from BMW. |

I currently own an STI, I thought about the 135i but don't have the money. I am thinking of "downgrading" to the type S. One for the better fuel economy, and two because they drive amazing and are so much fun.

Drove an 03 MCS, felt amazing. That comment you made about 198hp to 230hp. In my book is wrong. If I were to purchase a mini it would definitely be the JCW which I believe has 230hp if not more. Plus the Mini can be modified soo much more easier. What does the 128i have out right now? Air filters and exhaust I believe. Where as the mini has Cold Air Intakes, tons of exhaust choices, suspension upgrades, short shifters, and much more.

^ +1 if you are getting a car to tune, The Mini S >128 .
Lightweight, well balanced, and lively FWD cars are underrated. They are a blast to drive. Sometime purest forget to have fun. For a small touring convertible the 128 > Mini S IMO

I use to have a mini cooper (non S) 03 model. Now ive got a 125i/128i.
The mini (even the non s) is a hoot to drive, once you get it up to speed. however, mine had a lot of teething problems and RATTLES ( ppl put this down to the "character of the car", but its just poor quality) hence the change in car. but the newer minis shouldnt have any of the problems i went through or any of the annoying rattles. boot.. basically it will fit one suite case, barely. aesthetically, i find the newer mini a bit ugly and bug eyed from the front, and the air intake on the bonnet is pretty much useless as they have now moved the intercooler to the front. As the mini was a daily driver, these little things did start to annoy me. Having said that, i would go 128i/125i for the daily (which is still a great drive), and the mini for a weekendish sort of car. |

I've got the very same dilema...
G/f wants a MCS & I want a 128i Coupe. She likes lower price tag so I managed to get a kicking deal, after much negotiating, which means the tax-in price is only a few hundred over the MCS she wants. NOW she wants a used MCS to save even more money! Seeing as I'll need to drive it 200kms/day i think I'd more of say in the matter but no no nooooo.... the lady wants her MCS!!! Any hints or tricks to persuade her otherwise greatly appreciated! . |

Very simple. Say "I don't see a ring on my finger." If it's your primary transportation you get what you want while taking her advice into consideration (and being fiscally responsible of course). If it's her transportation that you will use occasionally then its her choice. Simple.

the roof height on the mini really is not that much off from any other smallish car, including all those cheap sedans from japan

The trade in I was offered on my S was something I just couldn't pass up. I don't like the new MINIs (07's and up) enough to stick with them, they have started to grow on me, but not enough. Plus, someone here let me drive their 128i and gave me car fever... sheesh!
My husband and I each have an S, ordered them on the same day. We're going to hang on to his, and when he gets a new car, his MINI will be our Sunday driver. I'm going to go ahead and trade my car in even though my 128 won't be here for several, several weeks. I'm not waiting for gas to go down, and the demand on MINIs to decrease. If anyone is interested in a 2006 S low mileage, let me know!! The dealership I am working with will let me bring my own buyer and set my price (which would be cheaper for the buyer than the dealership ) I dread Saturday, this is the only car I've ever really hated giving up. I wish I could keep it AND get the 128i. At least I'll have my husband's to drive... hehehehehe. I can say that I am ready for a less bumpy ride... |

The cars are too dif. IMO to really compare. Yes I agree the MCS is a great and fun car, just think of yourself in a bigger go-kart. But comparing it price-wise to me would be like comparing a nice brand new 7 to a nice brand new M5, yes you technically have the same amount of seats, dif. size of car for sure. But power is definatelly dif. and the dynamics of the two are way dif. Just drive both and justify for yourself. Think of your future with both and take that into account for your final decision.

I test drove a Mini S, 128 and 135; and my choice is 135 with sport package only in order to keep the cost down.
They are all nice car and perform very well wihin their own rights, but I still feel 128 or 135 is more for a mature people like me. My daughter told me that I look better in a 135 than a Mini S:-) and of course this is very subjective and so does when it come down to car purchase. Each one has their own prefernce and choice.
