but how about the tidiness of the new easily-controlled menus?

i know we all know how to use it, but BMW is more than just enthusiasts. And old people hate the current i-drive

Damn! THAT changes everything for me. After reading that, I now like the updated iDrive. I admittedly, without any reservation, do not like the new oversized display that can't be closed. I clearly like the smaller, more streamlined, cooler flip screen.

And, I think it is obvious that BMW has stuck the same display component that was designed for their larger cars into the 1er to save money.

But that objection aside, the internet connectivity is what has turned me around 180 degrees in favor of the '09 system. Internet connectivity is an awesome feature because it not only provides the obvious typical web-connection, but it opens the door for future internet-based data-streaming developments.

It's kind of a shame that BMW didn't put something that significant in the '08 U.S. 1-Series launch vehicles. That's weird, IMO.

Ah, Tagman, you have seen the light and changed your mind!!
As someone waiting for an '09, I think most of this is great, although I do totally agree about the display. It may be too big for the dash, and since it doesn't fold down, you can't get rid of it when you don't want it. I guess we'll just have to see it in person.

Sounds like the US version of ConnectedDrive will be somewhat limited compared to the rest of the world. This coming from Edmund's Inside Line review of the '09 3-Series.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...topanel..2.*#2

"More intriguing is BMW's new "ConnectedDrive" service that keeps the car in constant contact with the rest of the world through online networks. So far, the fully enabled ConnectedDrive isn't scheduled to be offered in the U.S.-bound 3 Series during 2009 — BMW says the country lacks the necessary technological infrastructure. However, in Germany at least, ConnectedDrive's talents include the ability to surf the Internet through the iDrive system while the car is parked (so there's no reading Inside Line on the autobahn)."

2009 nav photo?

Found these images of the nav screen in some 2008 1 series catalogs I've been collecting from dealers. The top image does look like it has the dimensions of the 2009 nav, flipped down, IMO.

The top image is from a 2008 1 series coupe catalog I picked up from the dealer yesterday. The bottom image is from the 1 series convertible catalog I picked up over a month ago.

My guess is this is a photo of the new nav BMW used for a new print run of the catalogs the dealer ran out of. Its the only image of this nav in the entire catalog, all other images in the same catalog are of the bottom image (2008 nav).

the pic at the top shows the storage box that comes with the "ablagenpaket" in Germany
the bottom pic shows the old nav monitor

if you go to www.bmw.de and use the car configurator you can configure the 09 model already

BimmerFile confirmation (and pics) of the new 1'er iDrive system for 2009: found at www.bimmerfile.com/2008/07/20/2009-1er-idrive/

"Below are the official BMW AG photos of the upcoming 1 series new iDrive system. In addition to the new controller, the current pop-up screen has exited the dash in favor of a new wider and higher resolution (1280X480 to be exact) fixed screen. The system will also feature a 80 GB hard disk and brand new menu system as previously discussed for the 3 and 7 models.
This new Professional navigation system will allow for a full-screen map display and additional features such as travel and route planners.
These changes have been confirmed for most markets outside the US. Click on the “link” tab to view at a higher resolution."

i dont mind that the screen is fixed, i wish it was integrated more into the dash layout, kinda like the 3, with the instrument cluster hump and the nav hump in the dash, not just a rectangle sticking out.. so thats my only con.

other than that, super excited i waited for the 2009, not to mention possible problems with the HPFP for 08
