Unfortunately it is going to be called M1 Coupé and M1 Convertible. There is no confusion with M1 Original and M1 Hommage. And the BMW Supercar will not be called M1, but Z9 or Z10, specially if it gets a the new 5.0l V10 Twin-Turbo, based on the 4.0l V8 Twin-Turbo.

Nope. The original M1 was a coupe. Just how a base Corvette is a coupe and Z4 is a coupe.

It was not called M1 Coupé, but just M1 because there was no M1 Spyder.

Let me repeat what Barry said: It won't be called M1 Coupe.

Good stuff. power buttons are kinda dumb

The name 'M Coupe' covers too great a number of possible choices so I doubt it's on the cards.

I'm betting it will be called the 1M... not my favorite, but I can live with it. It falls in line with the naming of the X5M and X6M and is the only logical choice if they aren't going to use M1.

C'est la vie.

Now I doubt my opinion matters, but here goes.

I honestly believe that the M version of the 1 series is going to be a huge waste of money. BMW isnt going to let the 1 series ///M be better than their beloved M3. The M3 is BMW's pride and joy, we all know that. The gap between the performance figures of the 135i and the M3 is not that big. Yes, the M3 has a lot more horsepower, but it also has a lot more weight to lug around. 0-60 times are not that far off, same electronically limited top speed. So, why buy the M verision of the 1 series? You will be buying the badge, some suspension bits and a little extra HP, all of which you will be able to get cheaper thru the aftermarket. If BMW tries to shoehorn the 1-series M in between the M3 and the 135i, then it will be a huge waste of money. Sorry if you don't like how I see this, frankly I dont care if you dont.

I think for the 1-series M car to make sense financially, it needs to be better than the M3. BMW won't do that, because it'll take away from M3 sales. The performance figures are too close between the 135i and the M3 for them to fit a $50k car (just a guess on price) in between them. BMW shot themselves in the foot by making the original 135i too good. They didnt leave enough room in between the 135i and the M3 for them to fit an M version of the car in there.

Unless BMW is going to make the 1 series M their new pride and joy (and I'll open a snow shovel store in Hell ), then I don't see this new "M car" being all that practical.

Fastest clocked stock BMW M3:
0 to 60mph 4.1sec
1/4mi- 12.5sec@113mph
0 to 140mph- 27.8sec

Fastest clocked stock BMW 135i:
0 to 60mph 4.7sec
1/4mi- 13.3sec@105mph
0 to 140mph- 20.5sec

All of the current M cars currently for sale: M3, M6, X5M, X6M all pull mid to low 4's to 60mph and accomplish the quartermile averaging in the mid 12's. The 1 series M will be no exception. There is nothing wrong with a 1 series M performing similar to an M3 b/c it will provide a different experience. A high revving NA V8 is a different experience than a Turbo Motor. Pure and simple.

Contrary to popular belief the performance figures are NOT that close. I wrote this on the fly. The diff to 150mph is MASSIVE as well. It takes more than software equipped car that unleashes 150lb more torque and similar hp to the M to beat it. It's been proven. Yes, a heavier less powerful M3 will beat a juiced up car in an all out drag. In gear? The M-DCT will take care of that.

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=393756

NOTICE: I did not mention a single thing about handling.

They dont have the same electronically limited speed either. The M3 is gov't limited a little bit higher at 160mph. The 1 without the sport package is at 140mph if I'm not mistaken. Your post is filled with misinformation.

IMHO

I don't think it matters if the M1 performs on par with the e90 M3, I think BMW would be fine with that. People that want power with more luxury will buy the M3. There is nothing wrong with that. People that want M handling, etc in a small more agile package will buy the M1. Different cars for different segments.

Personally, I think the M1 w/DCT will be spot on with the M3 w/DCT.
