Convertible Roof Defect
I don't know if any Aussie forum members are following this thread in the US, but it seems like a genuine defect in the vert roofs.
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=226 I have inspected my roof and it is already worn from the inside due to a plastic clip rubbing on the opening/closing mechanism. This fault is on the passenger side rear quarter of the roof along side the rear opening window. Its worn that thin that it is almost through the fabric. Will be ringing up BMW tomorrow. Its the lighter shade wear pattern midway on the rear quater in the photo. Its tearing from the inside out. Zuzu, I havn't noticed that but the seam stitching around the edge of the roof is undoing.

I contacted BMW and am taking it in next week for an inspection and will demand a new roof.. Dont want a patch on the inside that might shrink with the heat and look worse, and besides, they cant really fix the outside fabric which has discoloured and stretched.. |

Finally took the car into the dealers yesterday and they took some photos and said that they will get back to me...
At least they were a bit concerned and confused.. |

Got my car back last week and checked my roof. No defects yet.
Although Hubby said when he washed the car for me this moring he thought it leaked slightly.

The only leak I get when washing, is if I point the high pressure hose on the rubber seal between the front and rear quarter windows at a certain angle... But only a slight trickle.
Bur keep an eye on that passenger rear quarter part of the roof.. Mine is just about worn through.. My car was delivered June 08, so it has had quite a few opening/closing's of the roof. |

My car finally goes back to the dealer this comming Tuesday for the final inspection before the roof gets replaced..
The hole is getting a lot bigger and will soon wear right through. If you have a vert, keep a close eye on the passenger side roof rear quarter about mid centre of the pillar. You will see a lighter, shaded area forming as the hole developes from the inside. |

hmmm.. previously they always fix things, no question ask. I have my gear knob and handbrake replaced because the stitching is coming out, I guess they are cheap in comparison but, ... may be BMW Aust is tightening up?

But this time around I was told that supposedly my car was the first one reported in Oz with this defect and they had to go through the whole procedure of taking photos and sending them to Germany bla bla bla... Heard it all before... the main thing is that they replace the roof and identify why the problem occured in the first place so it doesnt repeat.. |

Then the seat back wore as well, they replaced that with minimal agro. Now I want them to replace the leather on the door trim, hopefully I won't get too much agro from them on that one. |

Wow that's some major issue right there. Hopefully they find a permanent fix before your warranties run out...

Nah...my fault really..
Had the car inspected back in June by the dealer and was agreed at the time to bring the car back at my convienience for further investigation and roof replacement.. I was undecided at the time whether to keep the car or upgrade, so did nothing about the repair.. Now that the fault is more obvious, have decided to replace the roof.. Didn't really want to have the car ripped appart.. It is quite a major job to remove and replace the roof. Have no choice in the matter now.. Getting to the point that it might leak water through the fault if I leave it any longer. |

Joe that sucks.
Hope they fix it up for you - that really shouldn't be happening to any convert, let alone a BMW! Hope it goes well. Christine's in for her first service on Friday; i'm expecting them to tell me to replace my rear tyres |

Good news for vert owners in Oz..Had the car inspected today by BMW's claims/warranty assessor, who are sent out by BMW Australia for larger/expensive warranty claims.
They took more photos then pulled the roof apart and took more photos for uploading to BMW Australia then off to Germany.. BMW has approved to have the full roof replaced under warranty.. Sylvania BMW ordered the roof today and should have it in about 3 weeks in Oz. Was told in the report that it was the first reported fault of that kind in Oz besides a couple of verts with broken/loose stitching on the roof. The techs don't seem to think that there is anything faulty in the folding mechanism, more so in the way the roof folds in.. For some reason the faulty passenger side roof folds/creases inwards instead of out as like the drivers side causing it to rub on a retainer clip. Anyway..Looks like after Xmas for the replacement roof.. |
