On mine the down stream sensor wire was too short. I took the risk of cutting and splicing using solder and heat shrink tubing. I did look into longer O2 sensors from other BMWs incase the increased resistance caused a CEL. Never followed through with it as I didn't have any issues.

I have had my DP w/ cat back installed for over a year now and passed inspection with emissions without any issue in NH in September of last year.

What kind of gains do downpipes usually achieve? Do de-cat DPs net higher gains than catted DPs?

Catted will give you 10 - 15 whp
Catless 20 - 25 whp

Turbo will reach max HP sooner and will be able to keep max HP longer compared to stock

Are gains uniform between US spec and Euro spec cars?

I know that the US S54 engines got significant gains from doing exhaust headers because they came with cats in them, whereas the Euro spec cars didn't, so gains from doing aftermarket headers were minimal.

Are the downpipes the same between US and Euro cars?

Give it a few more weeks to break-in. It should sound different as time goes by.

UPDATE:

@10k the SES light came on right before inspection last fall the cat. I didn't bother with it since I was storing it for the winter. I doubt it is the sensor as it seems to be sending signal properly and it was a new when I put in the CAT.

After many nights of research I bought an inline adapter from a fellow in Canada that keeps the DME happy. Readiness is set across the board & I have inspection this week. With my new found knowledge & my disappointment of the NO SES LIGHT promise from Wagner I will be switching to cat less DP when I do a turbo upgrade in the future.

Sounds great! Good thing you have the P3 to clear the CEL. My question would be, will it pass the sniffer? If yes, then it makes sense to go with an aftermarket DP with cats for the added HP and sound, while still passing emissions both visual and sniffer. If no, wouldn't you want a catless DP since the emissions result will be the same but with even more HP and sound? Just curious as I am too interested in an aftermarket DP but don't know if it's worth the hassle come emission time here in CA.

I don't know of anyone who has tested against a sniffer. Plus each state varies on how strict the sniffer is as there are a lot of variables.

I'd just remove it for emissions testing and go back to stock, then you have nothing to worry about.

Perhaps I'm not as mechanically inclined as others, but wouldn't that be a PITA to have to switch the entire exhaust back to stock every two years?

Ah, welcome to the modification world...

In hindsight, I rather pay someone or remove the downpipe then get hit with a hefty fine and/or have my car impounded/crushed.

Small price to pay for enjoying the perks of the modification the other 729 days of the year. I can tell you after modding dozens of cars over the years, it's not too big of a deal but others may find differently.

Just depends on how bad you want it and want to go through the process.

So...I didn't want to take the chance of running completely catless, also I was hoping that I would not have any SEL on the dash ( not the case, SEL flashes 1-2x a month).

Since I only drive 5k miles a year I take advantage of emissions exemption.

I just installed one of the sims. I left the car in stock mode and let it work it's magic. I haven't made it over to the inspection station yet, but I suspect I will be ok as readiness is set. When I installed mine I used heated shrink bullet connectors for the wire that I had to intersect. I don't have enough information, but I feel like I should reconnect the O2 as normal once I pass emissions because perhaps it will mess with my JB4 if it pulls data from the sensor.

FYI, the re-done website no longer says what it used to for this part.

The page now states, "Error display in the DME possible."

I went catted to prevent the SES light without an adapter. Since that didn't work out for me is there any reason not to go catless besides the smell? Will I see a noticable HP gain or is it not worth it since I already have this one installed?
