Caring for Your Shadowline Trim
SI B 51 53 02
Body Equipment September 2006 Technical Service This Service Information Bulletin This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. B51 53 02 dated October 2002. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Discoloration of Shadowline Trim MODEL E46 (3 Series), E60, E61 (5 Series), E64 (6 Series), E65, E66 (7 Series), E83 (X3), E53 ( X5) Equipped with Shadowline exterior trim SITUATION The optional glossy black Shadowline exterior trim may become discolored. CAUSE Analysis has determined that the discoloration is due to a film deposited on the trim which distorts the light reflecting off the trim. These deposits may come from car washes, hard water, or other environmental conditions. CORRECTION Deposits that cause the discoloration can be easily removed by polishing with a quality swirl removing polish, such as Meguiars #9. Note: The glossy black trim pieces are anodized, not painted, and the discoloration does not mean that the surface has been damaged. Therefore, the trim pieces should not be replaced for this complaint. |

I had same problem with my 545i whenever I went through a touchless automatic carwash. The detergents they use are too strong and it ends up turning your trim into a blue'ish mother of pearl effect and its a BITCH to get rid of it.
Hand wash only. |

is using a power buffer on the shadowline trim appropriate to remove this discoloration?

well I can say that I have had the dealership try to buff mine out 2 times now. I have also tried to buff it out (only using a blue pad) to no avail. They are "good will" replacing it. BUT!!! In order to replace the lower rear portion they have to install a new fricken window!! I like how BMW says "it is good will", yet its clearly defective/poorly designed. It shouldnt do that after a washing if everything else on the car is fine. They need to clear coat these pieces or something to prevent this from happening.

Yeah regular hand waxing did not work...I eventually took it to my dealer and had them detail and buff it with a RO and it came out fine after that....

FYI I had the same issues (Severe "rainbowing" on the trim) and I used Liquid Glass polish and a microfiber cloth and it did a real good job cleaning it up.

has anyone tried "Never Dull" wadding?
i tried it on a small part of the shadowline trim the other day and it seems to take off the water spots with very little effort.

I doubt it- clay bars are designed to get small particles/tar/etc off of paint. These aren't painted, they're anodized, so you would need to polish them most likely. However, you won't hurt them by trying!

I had just parked in the lot outside of a local Target this past summer and I had a guy in a Porsche Cayman S come up to check out my car. He was curious about the 1 series. He looked at the shadowline trim (which is discolored/purple/blue) and says "Wow, that's a really cool feature, I like that!"
