Question Cobb to MHD is it worth the switch?

Hello all fellow 1addicts,

I am kinda in a dilemma right now. I currently am running a cobb stage 2+ tune with vargas stage 2+ turbos, catted DPs, intercooler, throttle body, charge pipes and inlets/intakes. The only supporting mod I am missing is a fuel pump. I am debating if its worth switching over to the MHD flasher as it has more custom features. In terms of off the shelf maps does anyone know if the MHD stage 2+ OTS would make more power then the Cobb sage 2+? I know Vargas uses MHD.

Best,
Flynn

Sounds like you've kinda answered your own question. Go with Vargas custom MHD tune. If they know whats already a very well balanced base tune for your setup I would think that would be the way to go.

For OTS, no. For your custom application, it sounds worth it.

Cobb is a dead end. They spend far more effort creating new products than supporting and upgrading existing tuners and maps. MHD is constantly evolving and is cheaper than Cobb. I think most custom tuner use MHD as well.

I'm staggered that you're on Cobb, let alone an OTS flash with hybrid turbos.

MHD now! Get a custom tune by a reputable tuner... TwistedTuning/V8bait/Motiv!

It's what the previous owner was running at the time. I have had my eyes on a custom map since I purchased the car.

When I upgraded my turbos Rob from RB told me " absolutely do NOT run these turbos on any OTS map" And to tune my car to mhd stage 0 until I could get a custom tune in it.
If your running a 3.5 tmap sensor you could cause an overboost on your turbos

Thanks for the info, Shop said stage 2+ Cobb tune would be safe until I get it dyno tuned. Its been running smooth for the last 5 months without any leaks or issues so I am not worried about over-boosting.

I don't understand why you cannot run an OTS map with aftermarket turbos. The car is going to target a specific boost and AFR. The turbos that the air goes through before it gets to the engine shouldn't matter.

What am I missing?

Don't know if I know enough to explain it, just know RB and my indy mechanic both told me the same thing so I listened.

Talked to tony today at VTT and he said I'll be fine right now but when I go to get it dyno tuned I'll be able to run 600whp with upgraded pumps and full e85

You're gonna need some sort of supplemental high pressure fuel to do that. Port injection, shotgun hpfp, etc.

Otherwise you're gonna be capped at ~e50-70. Your hpfp will crash due to the lower density.

Cobb is sort of entry-level, they make it real easy, then more experienced tuners realize they can save money on tunes and spend it on other things...like real perfromance parts like down pipes.

thread bump. Was wondering if you're still on COBB AP? I recently got a used one from a friend's coworker. New to BMW so when I saw the MHD flasher I thought it was one of those scams lol

Now I can't find stage 2 maps anywhere. Was wondering if you were still on it to share

I've got a folder of maps from back when I had mine working. Send me a PM with your email address and I can zip them and send them.

No problem. Zipped them and sent them to you. 2MB or so total.

It's what I've got, it's been a while so I can't say exactly what they are or how to load them. The folders and some files are quite clearly labeled though.

I vaguely remember downloading them all from the Cobb site a few years ago. I had the Cobb installed, but the dealer flashed my car to stock and afterwards I couldn't use the Cobb any more. It thought it was still installed or something like that. I didn't know the dealer was going to do it, nor know that I'd have to unmarry it first. Oh well.

Good luck!

Thanks just got them!

Just realized they're N55 (needed N54) but I appreciate it tremendously nonetheless. I'll keep them in case I get an n55 lol

Ah so your COBB was rendered useless by the dealer basically. That sucks. It cost nearly as much as a new one just to get it unmarried from COBB (which by now is pointless).

D'oh! It would make sense they are different. I didn't even think of it. Bummer.

Right, to buy it all over again just made sense to get the MHD instead.

Yeah I agree. If I could do it over I'd go with MHD. When I first saw MHD I thought it was a scam. The dongles I saw looked like the ELM 327 ... but orange. And their website looked sketch lol. Only found out till after that it's actually legit. Maybe after a while when I want to upgrade to 17T or 19T twins I'll swap to MHD.

Although it's probably better if I can try to resell the COBB now while I still can. Got it for $300 CAD ($220 USD).
