N55 Ticking/Rattling on Acceleration WITH VIDEO

Video:

Need some help from you guys. My 2012 N55 135i has been having a ticking noise under acceleration for about a year now. Car has 70k miles on it and I noticed a few months after I bought it last year, that with my radio off and windows down i can hear a ticking sound from the front of the car. With the windows up you don't hear it. AC on and off is the same. Sport or comfort mode same.

Only happens when the engine is fully warmed up and between the rpms at idle to 3K. After 3K the ticking goes away. There is NO sound revving in neutral/Park. Its silky smooth sounding revving in neutral without anything abnormal.

Its more noticeable when driving next to a wall or highway divider where the sound echos. If i apply very light throttle, no ticking. Moderate to heavy throttle it ticks up to 3K and stops.

Car is stock besides an intake, and this issue hasn't seemed to affect drivability at all. I'm really interested in going pure stage 2 in the future though, and would feel a lot more at ease if I figured this out before investing too much money into it.

Any ideas guys?

Can't really make anything out with the video. Hopefully someone else can.

Does it increase with wheel speed or engine speed.

It does increase in speed/frequency as the RPMs increase until about 3k then it stops (or at least is completely droned out by engine noise). You have to listen closely in the video, it's an audible ticking noise as the throttle is pressed, almost sounds like something rubbing up against a bicycle spoke.

EDIT: You can hear it pretty clearly at the 3 second mark of the video where I accelerate slightly.

If you let off throttle, clutch in, or shift to neutral and roll does it go away?

It's a DCT, not manual, so I can't just disengage the clutch. That being said, as soon as I let off the throttle the noise stops, and it doesn't occur at all when the car is in neutral. It only occurs on throttle in gear

Hmm. That's interesting. If it's not present rolling with engine speed at 3k off throttle then I think we can rule out bearings and wastegate.

Does it happen in any gear?

Could be flywheel chatter. Dunno if that happens with DCT.

There's a thread with this issue happening on an X5 with a DCT a few years back. Dealership replaced the turbo, still had the noise, they ended up buying the dudes car back because they couldn't diagnose it after multiple months.

I haven't tried rolling it in neutral, just in neutral at a standstill, so maybe i'll try that today.

From what I noticed, it does happen in multiple gears at low speed. I can only hear the ticking until about 20-30mph. I haven't tried higher gears that much because I didn't want to lug the engine too much, so maybe i'll try that today as well. Maybe flywheel chatter but I just don't know, I'm not sure how I could narrow this down to that unless I got an external mic and stuck it right next to the transmission while driving.

See if it ticks while in neutral while coasting.

If it doesnt, I'd really recommend taking it to a European performance shop if you have a good one near you.

I'm not really picking anything up in the video either (will listen again later when I have headphones).

Simple suggestion but.. It wouldn't be a rock or something stuck in your tire would it? There's also reports of some rear brake pads with the balancing weight that comes loose and makes some sort of noise but I haven't heard in person to compare.

I have 2 sets of wheels/tires that I run on this car depending on the season, can be heard on both. Also I just just all my brakes and rotors replaced about 8k miles ago but still heard it after that.

Factory splash shield in place correctly?
It stiffens the inner fenders which can deflect at speed and rub a tire. Faster speeds may just be drown out by surrounding noise.
Simple enough to turn a wheel to full lock and have a look for rub marks.

Had this exact issue on the exact same car (Ď12 N55 DCT) while driving on the highway. Same as you, only on throttle. Randomly stopped after about 10-15 mins of that highway driving and hasnít happened again since. Will follow this thread closely as Iíd like to know whatís causing this and hopefully prevent it from happening again.

Just want to update this thread and let everyone know that I'm almost positive I have SOLVED this issue finally!

During some recent modification of the car, I've had to cut the exhaust off at the axel, which deletes the muffler. After doing so I no longer hear the noise.

This car has had the golf tee mod for ages, but I'm assuming that even though the exhaust flap is forced to be open constantly, it can still rattle. Either that or the muffler itself had an issue.
