Trade in Value for your 1M

Hi, I am interested to trade in my 1M for the M3.

I got a trade in offer in my local BMW Dealer.

My car is VO with all the options.

The car had 11,500 miles on it.

They offered me $53,500.

Just want to share this information, and if you dont mind, please share your trade in value based on your local dealership. So we can all compare.

I'm certainly no expert, though I do own a small business; but that strikes me as fair. They do have to make a profit and cars out there seem to be going for $58-62K.

In November I paid $68K for a vehicle with 2900 miles.

Also, take into account that you only pay tax on the difference between trade value and sale price of M3. At least in my state. Makes a big difference.

Yes. That's what I like to trade in to save me tax. 6% still not bad.

also, I found another dealership offer me $1000 off MSRP for the M3. And I am the 1st.

Plus the value of the "hassle factor" of a private party sale.

Good Luck....

My CA said that his dealership did a retail spec for a used 1M with average miles and loaded. It was $65,000.

Bottom line: you can do far better selling it yourself. It's not difficult and you'll be well ahead of what they are offering and you'll also be able to offset the decrease in the M3's value. You have a much desired car and therefore the luxury of picking your buyer and dictating your price.

You should sell it yourself...the amount you can sell it for in the private markets will far surpass the money you would save on the sales tax of a trade in....you are talking about losing THOUSANDS of dollars trading it in......SELL IT YOURSELF!!!!

When you are selling a car that is worth more than original MSRP, it gets more complicated. I sold mine myself and got the same as the he has been offered by the dealer. The dealer turned around and sold it for $59K because they can get financing, warranties, inspect it, etc.

What you say is generally true but the 1M is again and exception. You might be able to get more separately but you have to find someone with cash since some banks will not lend over blue book or MSRP. If you get sales tax benefit from trading in, that is worth it. If not, offer it to a fellow fan for a little more than the trade-in price and if it doesn't go, trade it in. That is a very good trade-in price!

Good luck.

Seems like a fair price, try to get them to go to 55k. If you're selling though I'd say sell now before the new M3/M4 comes out. There may be less people out there willing to pay 60k for a 1M when for just a tiny bit more they can get the new M3/M4.

the values are finally falling.....i think it has to do with the M3/M4 coming out. If you're going to get $53k now on a trade in....do it now and run!!! you definitely won't get that offer in 6 months.

come 2015 it seems more likely i am going to move on to an F80 M3 now as well. it is one hell of a car from the info known thus far. a 'used' 1M is my 2nd choice.

going down might be more accurate than "falling!"

: )

I don't see deeply discounted 1Ms yet. Yes, many will compare the 1M to the new M3 but then there is still a place for those that want the beautiful clean purposeful dash without TV display, real engine sound not digital, no start-stop, a place to stick the key fob, manual seats with more headroom and one of the coolest manliest cars BMW has made in 8 years since 2006 M3 ZCP manual, sunroof delete.

yeah you're right...not 'falling' but definitely going down....most of the cars on sale are not selling, and the ones that are for sale are getting heavily discounted before sale. It's the right time for them to go down now though....with the 1-series discontinued, the 2-series arriving, and the M3/M4 orderable soon.

It sucks because when i was shopping for one in August there was no selection the prices were high....now there are plenty of cars for sale and prices are going down...just my luck! lol

I sold mine outright but sold it thru my dealer thus being able to take advantage of the tax credit. Best of both worlds.

Well, 135is in stunning blue is nothing to sneeze at! I think that will take some of the edge off missing the 1M.

Anyway, Original Poster going to trade in or sell?

I think I will try to sell it myself first and do the paperwork with dealership, so I can use that to offset the tax on the new car.

wow... heck of an offer.

So basically.. if you were to take the offer... you got to drive just under 12K miles for free.

Schweet. Thanks for the data point.

LOL.. agree.... that aint " falling.."..

heck I'm not sure that really even meets the definition of " dropping ..." when one can trade the car in for equal to or better than what you paid.

you gotta let go of the piped in engine sound thing there though bro... new Porsche 911 TT has the same. All the cool companies are doing it.. ;-). Ford in the Boss 302.... VW... Porsche in the 9111 and Panamera... and of course BMW. bottom line... if the car sounds good... it sounds good...

plus... it's not like it's an ELECTRIC car and then 100 percent of the sound is generated.... what some manufactuers are doing is just installing a diaphragm that allows some of the sound to come into the vehicle right?

Did your dealer charge anything for this? I've mentioned it to two dealers and both said they would do it - for a price ($500-ish).

Also, does anyone know how much time is allowed to pass between the sale and the purchase? For example, let's say I sell a car to a private party, but the sale goes through a dealer. How much time do I have to buy a car from the dealer and still be able to take advantage of the tax savings?

On a related note, I think it's dumb that the tax treatment is different for private party transactions and dealer transactions. If I sell a car and buy a car, why should the tax treatment depend on who the other party is? Not that there aren't bigger problems for people to be working on...

Sorry for the post.

A $150 doc prep fee was all I was charged. I have a great relationship with my dealer though.

Sorry, man, believe me trying to let go! I have no problem with amplifying with resonators, pipes whatever. I would run a pipe in the cabin if I could...: ) A digital sound track that you can't turn off crosses the line for me but lets leave it at that. All I'm saying is that there are still many that will appreciate the simplicity of the 1M over some of the new offerings.

The 1Addicts member who test drove the new M235i recently featured on the front page of Bimmerpost.com mentioned that when you roll down(or open?) the front windows the active sound switches off.

I bet a good coder could defeat it permanently, if someone so desired!
