What oil?

I've been using BMWs high performance full synthetic oil SAE 5w-30. Obviously it's bmw oil so I'm Sure it's fine but am I missing out not using another brand?

Go spend about 72 hours reading info on BITOG. Oil is a religion to quite a few who post there.

Just spent 72 hours on BITOG reading...and reading...and reading. Getting ready for my 1,200 mile break-in in my '13 IS and after all my research, I decided to go with...BMW's genuine 5w30 full synthetic. GL. Thanks to all the posters here and on BITOG. Tons of helpful info. Let us know what you decide.

My recommendations would be to choose between the following LL-01 approved oils:

Mobil 1 0W-40
Castrol Edge Syn 0W-30 (German Castrol)
Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40

Mobil 1 is probably the best bang for buck oil you can get for your BMW and easily available at Wally World for $25/5 quarts or less.

German Castrol is considered by some to be magic pixie dust for BMW's, since it is fully group IV synthetic and has quite the following.

Pennzoil Ultra can be very hard to get (Amazon has a decent price, especially if you subscribe to it, though they stop carrying it occasionally) but it is supposed to be an excellent cleaning oil.

Others would call out boutique/European oils like Motul, Redline, Royal Purple, Liqui Moly, etc., but the three above are usually less expensive/on sale more often/easily available locally.

Either way, just my two cents on a easily confusing issue that can often lead to information overload.

I've been very happy with Motul XCESS 5w40. Quieted down the motor at idle a bit, and runs a good deal cooler in the summer than 30 OE. Not brutally expensive either.

Can't go wrong there. BMW specs good fluid, it is just their recent interval changes that are screwy.

Well it may be an okay oil, but BMW's oil is probably the last I would choose when buying and changing my own oil. There are better oils available for a lot less money.

Redline would be my last choice.

For certain applications, like the S54/65/85, only BMW's spec oil is worth a damn.

I was thinking more like German Castrol or Mobil 1 Euro. I think Redline is a little too expensive for what you get.

I run German spec "Castrol Edge FST" in 0w40 grade - and I like it. As long as the oil you are using has a "BMW LL-1" rating you will be fine. I would think twice about using a non approved oil though.

Because I want to run German made Castrol. I have access to Mobil-1 oil sold on the Army Base here. I can also order stuff from the states to my APO. Its just I prefer the German Castrol.

Normally a 5L jug of Castrol oil costs 79 to 99 euros. I can buy the same oil "discounted" for about 45 euros.

When I first got my car I was using Mobil-1 0w40 European Blend(black label bottle) oil bought at the PX on base here. After three oil changes I decided to give the German Castrol RS Edge oil a shot. I was simply AMAZED on how much quieter my engine ran on cold start. There was a lot less metallic noise. My oil temps were also just under two needle widths cooler all the time.

So I am ok paying more for my oil. Its like all the Germans know... if you want quality you gotta pay up.

I have no idea! I live in Germany!

Looks like maybe Amazon.com sells something simular but not the same oil. It doesn't show a LL-1 rating thought. ?

I would also look around on "Bob the oil Guy" oil forum/blog.

Advance Auto, Autozone and Pepboys. Castrol Edge 0W-30, look on the back of the bottle and it says made in Germany. The 0W-40 is very similar, but made in Belgium, and I think only available at Advance Auto.

Yeah Redline and Royal Purple may both be great oils, but they will not pay to get their oils LL-01 approved.

What you used was probably Mobil's older blend of 0W40 (SM or SL). I believe the "noise" associated with Mobil's Euro oil has supposedly been alleviated with their latest SN certified blend. Either way, GC and M1 are both great oils to use.
