Help me find a new 135i clutch
So I'm getting some clutch slippage under tuned boost. Holds power if I put the tune on Map0 (its a Procede)
For people who don't know heres how you test a knackered clutch: - Put the car in top gear (6th) - Get on a smooth straight road and cruise at 2000rpm - Go WOT and keep an eye on the revs If the revs rise faster than the car accelerates you have slippage. Here's some background: - I am only on stock turbos and don't plan on going big single or hybrids. So don't need a clutch that will hold big power - This is a road car so I don't want to deal with chatter or a grabby/difficult clutch - I'm on a budget and will do all the work myself (as always). I do everything on my car and while I haven't dropped a transmission before, it doesn't scare me at all. - Not in a huge rush as the slip is pretty minor and can just drive with the tune turned off. - Want to keep any individual purchase below $1K AUD to avoid customs - Want to keep the downtime of my car to minimal or zero. Ideally i'll just do the job on the weekend. Based on the above criteria I am thinking of a new LUK dual mass paired with a 550i clutch: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMW-135i-...8AAMXQudxRYsrd https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E82-13....0L/ES1897635/ https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...mw-21207603248 **EDIT*** Cheapest listing on ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMW-135i-...MAAOSweuxWRTpA Might not get the clutch from ECS tuning as their shipping costs are usually terrible. Happy to source the components individually. Anyone sourced a clutch recently in Australia? Would be keen to know alternatives or if someone has priced up a kit cheaper than the links above, keeping in mind of the dot points I outlined above. Also I think I need new bolts for the transmission housing and a clutch alignment tool, can anyone comment on anything else I'll need? Long shot, but has anyone had experiences with resurfacing a dual mass? From what I've read its quite tricky and very few places can do it. Also not keen on taking apart the car and finding out it can't be resurfaced. Even if it can, that's more downtime for the car. Heres the list of required parts: QTY PART NUMBER DESCRIPTION 1 21207542984 Dual mass flywheel (LUK part number DMF112) 1 21207603248 550i clutch kit (includes clutch, pressure plate, release bearing and pressure plate bolts) 5 23001222894 Steel bell housing bolts 8 11227520706 Flywheel bolts T60 M12x1.5mm 1 83300495449 N54 Clutch alignment tool 2 18307553603 Downpipe->exhaust gaskets (needed as midsection needs to be removed) 2 18307561670 Midsection->axleback exhaust bolts (buy these if yours strip) Also will be useful to have a flywheel locking tool. Genuine part number is for the lock tool is 119260 but the ISTA documentation says you have to manually elongate the hole. I will just grind my own tool out of some steel I have.

I've just broken in my OEM clutch replacement by Exedy (~1000kms). Cost about $550 bought locally. Didn't replace my DM flywheel but did get it machined by someone my mechanic knew My stock one was slipping very badly when I replaced it, probably left it a little too long but it made it to about 105,000kms.
The Exedy bites better than the OEM and holds up perfectly fine with a JB4. It's supposedly rated to hold up to 350rwkw which I don't see myself exceeding any time soon! Let me know if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help where I can |

I'd be very interested to know where you got your dual mass flywheel machined! Was it local here in Melb and how much did it cost? I saw the excedy on eBay and looks like a good price. Would be good to know if the clutch pedal is heavier or if the clutch is grabby/hard to modulate. I am definitely looking for an OEM feeling clutch

I got the exact flywheel linked to on ebay and am running the 550i clutch too. Got the clutch kit from FCPEURO as they were the cheapest. Also bought new bellhousing and flywheel bolts for peace of mind.
It's holding up well. I last dyno'd at 290kw on blown/leaky stock turbos and it holds fine. |

I was looking at the 550i clutch prices online a few months ago and there was a us based ebay seller selling them slightly cheaper than ECS yet there p&h fees were only like $40.
Have a look on www.ebay.com A clutch GB may be an option also, as whilst I dont need one I'm sure its only a matter of time (my car has 82k kays now, but alas most hwy kilometers so less wear on clutch components than a car which has 80k kays driving in the city) I'm in two mind wether to get a cheapish and sensible 550i clutch, or if/when in future I get upgraded turbos I'll need something sturdier such as the spec 3 or motiv twin plate clutch... |

FCP euro has the 550i clutch for $400+56.42 usps shipping. Group buys are probably out because of the customs threshold. I need to buy some more gasket kits for walnut blasting so at least I can spread the cost of shipping. My main concern is the flywheel though. The clutch kit only costs just over $600 which sounds reasonable but the dual mass is quite pricey at just under 1k. Would definitely like to get that cost down a bit if possible.

you wont find the flywheel any cheaper than that ebay link, trust me. I looked for months while driving around on a continuously degrading clutch that eventually wouldn't even let me get over 60km/hr.
Don't bother trying to get it re-surfaced. Not worth the hassle. What if its unsuccessful? you're up for more labour charges to have the work re-done with a new flywheel. |

Yeah, will probably end up going that ebay link unless I can find a single-mass thats got minimal/no chatter and significantly cheaper. Man I hate how the flywheel costs so much on European cars. Would actually be fine if the aud was actually decent, would have been pretty cheap otherwise.
Good thing i'm doing the install myself or I'd have to add another $800 or so in labour. Found the clutch tool as well: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...ol-83300495449

Have you consider the mfactory SMFW? Seems to get positive reviews, I believe its only the lightweight Al SMFW which get major chatter issues... |

Just priced up the flywheel from Mfactory from their website: Mfactory 572 USD = 793.51 AUD LUK 648.45 USD = 899.56 AUD Will be a tad higher once you take into account non-ideal conversion rates. Honestly I would rather pay the extra $100 to not worry about chatter. I have also never driven a lightweight flywheel, does it make the engine more enjoyable and revvier? Coming from my previous car, I find the stock N54 to be pretty free revving to be honest.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showpa...diagId=11_3187 Will give you the correct flywheel for your vehicle. The clutches are the same. Dual mass part number: BMW part 21207542984 / LUK part number DMF112 550i clutch: BMW 21207603248 LUK doesn't list the F10 550i on their website for clutches, only the E60 550i. Not sure if they are the OEM or not for the 550i clutch.

Happy for you to test mine out before you commit if you'd like! Based off your posts though it looks like you'd be going down the 550 clutch route? Also, don't mean to hijack your thread but I was looking at getting walnut blasting done as my car has done over 105k kms and I doubt it has ever been done. Anywhere to recommend? Can't seem to find anything on it in Melbourne! Much appreciated |

550i clutch is the most likely option at this point. Would love to get a feel of your clutch setup. If you're free on Nov 15th you should come along to the coding meet: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1184442 Here's shameless plug for my walnut blasting setup: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1161290 Mine had 130k without ever been blasted. Gained some mid->top end power

I just recently replaced clutch (335is) and new dmfw in my 135. Both clutch and dmfw came out looking virtually brand new (yet was slipping), and the replacement clutch looked the same as the one I removed. In the end it solved my slipping but I can't say I really know why, if had them out again I'd pay more attention to the pressure plate diaphragm, I'm thinking the 335is clutch applies a tad more pressure and that's where the extra torque capacity is. I could sell you my used dmfw.... It still has factory machine markings on it.

If your dual mass has super low mileage I'd consider buying it off you if you're willing to let it go for cheap.

If that is low enough i'll take some photos of the surface and think of a price. i am in perth so their would be a cost to transport. from my experience, i caught mine slipping early which really corresponded to a re-flash and subsequent increase in low end torque. if you did the same and you are handy around tools, i would just re-run your existing dmfw after inspecting it. its unlikely to be worn, i wasted money on replacing mine. if it turns out you need to replace it as well you only wasted your own time as opposed to a mechanics time (cost). |

if/when i have the issue again (hopefully years away) i'd like to look at modifying the diaphragm spring. i'm sure there would be a way to fabricate / modify it to a heavier spring.
