I would buy it from an online BMW dealer like United or Tischer or Reeves, etc. Some have also used Turner or ECS Tuning. IF you buy from a dealer the part has a 2 year warranty.

By the time you add a thermostat and coolant your at $423.05. OE parts from many online dealers are just a few bucks more than that. I would go with an OE part with a two year warranty rather than an OEM(aftermarket part) with a one year warranty.

The thermostat is a separate part from the water pump. It too will fail in time. So... everyone just replaces both as a set. You will also need new water pump bolts(bc they are Alu and are a one time use bolts). I would also replace the "elbow" coolant hose and any other hoses on your car that show signs of cracking or are hard to the "touch" when you squeeze them. Don't forget to use only BMW approved coolant too.

Previously voted so I cant again. Waterpump failure @ 61,815 miles(2010 CPO). Had the car towed to the dealer. I told my SA twice that the boost seemed off and asked them if they could push the car hard while test driving it. They said they will. SA said the car was fine, come pick it up. Took a Uber there (1 hr away) only to pull off the lot to discover the boost was still not right and the half engine light came on. Had to wait 45 minutes for a loaner and drive home another hour. Should I ask the dealership to replace the thermostat?

I would and if they don't cover it buy it yourself and get them to install. I think the labor overlaps so you should only pay for the part!

Half asleep while doing paperwork and posting... I guess I should have asked them prior to putting the waterpump in.

Has anyone seen a correlation between pump failures and power mods? I'm wondering if the addition of power and the extra heat caused may be the trigger for pumps failing at 60,000 miles instead of 100,000+ miles.

Nope. Seems to happen to everyone regardless.

It's funny you ask this now. A good friend of mine Elsabor67 replaced his waterpump just last year. His 1st pump died on the Autobahn on the way(or was it coming back?) to the 'Ring last year. He replaced the pump himself and used a BMW part from a localMW Zentrum. His 2nd pump just died last week. He visits the NS('Ring) and Hockenhiem often. So heat could be an issue. Or he could have just gotten a "bad pump".

Word to the wise... KEEP your receipts(!), my friend was not aware that even when you buy just a part from any BMW dealer... THAT part will have a two year warranty. He could have gotten his replacement pump for free... had he kept his receipt.

My second pump just quit on me coming from doing some work on my car. My 1st one failed on the Nurburgring and had to get the car flat bedded back home. The new one hasn't been on the car a year yet. When I spoke with BMW, they had a copy of my receipt by vin number. Only thing is that they want the car to confirm that it wasn't something I did for it to go bad. If it failed due to no fault of my own, they will cover the replacement and the labor.

I see some pumps that look like they have metal impeller housings and then the OE BMW pump that looks like it is a plastic impeller housing. Has anyone taken a pump apart to look at the housing and impeller? What is it that is specifically failing? Might an OEM fully metal part be better than the plastic OE BMW part?

I'm just thinking that maybe an OEM part might actually last longer than the original BMW pump.

I suspect BMW has changed the internal specs of the pumps over the years. The Germans often do that over time. I also suspect that BMW has changed the SW that runs the pump - like when the engine gets switched off. I don't think we will ever know.

What we do know is the pumps do fail without notice! So its prudent to replace the pump AND thermostat before they fail.

A quick update to my water pump saga..........

I lucked out from having to replace my pump. Looks like one of my 12v constant pwr cables decided to ground out and it came out to be the cable that comes form the junction box above the battery. Inside that box there is a "blade" that has fuses ranging from 250AMP/80AMP x 2/100AMP x2> The 100 amp one that provides 12V constant to the pump popped the fuse and luckily did not damage my pump.

Better to pay $45 bucks than have to pay over 350$ for a new pump
