Hi. Looking to buy a 1M

Hi guys, I'm new(ish). Been lurking around a bit but this is my first post.

I have owned a mint E30 325is and a 130i, which was written off a few months ago in a car park by a nice lady in a Kluger with a bullbar. Took out my front passenger side.

Anyway, I'm seriously considering a 1M as a weekender. I am leaning towards VO but obviously the condition of the car is more important than anything else really.

Does anyone know either of these two cars (I know the first one is AW but is low k's and at a reasonable price).

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-4110687/?Cr=1

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-4068557/?Cr=5

Also, for anyone who has bought one recently, it would be great to know how much you were able to negotiate, i.e. what it was advertised for vs what you ended up shelling out.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
Tom

I believe the AW is no longer on carsales. It varied a lot in prices depending on conditions. I guess depends whats your budget. It also comes downs to what options and bells and whistle you are after?? Like mine I paid a premium as it has BMW performance seats from factory.

That AW probably sold for 69-7x range.

I checked it out and the owner (nice person) really wanted 70+

It was mechanically pristine, but not the best cosmetically.

Thanks, I had a feeling this may be the case, it not being that good cosmetically.

Another one sold today that I had my eye on. In Melbourne, an AW, had about 30000km on it.

The search continues....

Hahaha yeah exactly right! Especially where they've parked it - front and center. Almost went into the curb the first time i saw it. I think they've had it for a few weeks now, so they may or may not be wanting to get rid of it soon.

When looking for a BMW 1M

Get the car checked out

First thing is look at the gaps in the panels, they should be almost perfect

Look at the front lip of the bumper and how many times it has been scraped, if its pristine its most like been resprayed so have someone check it out carefully for other damage.

Listen to the gearbox especially in 1st and 2nd, if it makes any whinny noises, the gearbox is on its way out and if under warranty insist on getting it changed

Listen for any drivetrain noise, if its noisy there is something wrong.

listen to the motor especially when its cold, insist of opening the bonnet and listen to the motor when cold. If standard and its popping and misfiring a little bit its ok for a few sec but if misfiring a lot there might be issues.

Feel the clutch take up point and smell the engine bay, these aren't cheap to replace
especially if you want to remain stock

Look at how many times the rims have been gutter bashed and look for rim repairs

Look at the under trays and see if they have been scraped

Get the car mechanically checked independently, don't let the dealer tell you it has been checked. Big LOAD of BS

Thanks Marty, appreciate the advice. I definitely will get a PPI done by a good rep outfit before buying. Only thing is getting to look over the car myself first for interstate examples to see if it's even worth getting a PPI done.

This one being a case in point. It is Rough . First thing I noticed was paint off the drivers side door where the previous owner did not show much care when opening the door when parked next to posts/poles. The paint, badly swirled, no 2 bucket method here. Not only was the front spoiler badly scratched, it had (to my mind) a huge kink on the passenger side where it took a hit of some sort. You can see it in the pic on carsales if you look carefully. Also, the muffler had noticeable dings. I didn't even bother checking inside the car as by that time I had lost interest.

Already on it 😊 It's in Newcastle. Rang up and have organised a look tomorrow. Supposed to be perfect save a few stone chips. It's a Tamworth car.....we'll see....

It went well, thanks!

The car was pretty much as described. It has quite a few stone chips up front and underneath is a bit scratched up......but that is about it, oh there's also a chip on the passenger side rear flare., Apart from that it basically presented as new. Inside it still has the new car smell and I could not find anything to pick at in the cabin.

I went for a half hour test drive and it is tight as a drum. Plus seeing 70xx kms on the clock is pretty amazing. The engine ran well from a cold start, no weird noises at all.

The dealer, Audi Used in Newcastle, was easy going and in complete contrast to the Castle Hill dealer I saw a couple of weeks ago. Gave me the keys to look the car over at my leisure and going for a test drive was no issue at all.

Anyway, we struck a deal I was quite happy with, paid a deposit and, pending a PPI, look to be the owner of one heck of a nice car

I gotta say I'm pretty excited!

Well done, lot of car for that money!

I wouldn't worry about scratches underneath. I absolutely guarantee you that you're going to scrape the front lip many, many times.

Thanks and yeah, I won't bother getting that sorted. Sooner or later, no matter how careful you are, these things will bottom out. Will look at getting those chips sorted though.

Cheers, might just take you up on the top painter offer. The chips will crack me sooner or later, being the pedantic prick that I am.

When I take delivery of the car and get it back to Sydney, I was going to take it to Advan for a good service and quick checkover. I hear good things about them and they're not too far away. Last service it had was in 2014 when it had 6400kms on the clock, around 600kms ago.

Be good to see your car if it's still there when I get mine there.

Just realised this was you, Tom! Nice work - can't wait to see pics.

What's the plan with the Clio? Still keeping it?
