What works for me is to pretend there's a rock on top of my foot and I can't get it off. 19mpg in nearly all local and 2-lane, same as my E46 330.

My 128i just got 27 MPG with mixed city/highway driving. Once it had a few thousand miles on it the mileage should improve a little.

amen to that. this car is just too much fun to stay out of the power all the time. If I wanted to save gas, I'd have bought a diesel golf

When your exhaust is as loud as mine, you gain a little bit of sound discipline. Along with sound discipline, you improve gas mileage.

My 135i averaged 31 MPG driving between 65-70MPH on a trip upstate. Very impressed.

My 128i got 30.9 mpg (on the car computer, reset after filling the tank) on an RT from DC to NC beaches and back. On I95 and I64, I was maintaining a steady 77mph (a smidge above the limit, but slower than most folks) in the right lane. On the NC roads, I stayed at 7 to 8 mph over the limit. I am hoping for slightly better economy over time. But like someone mentioned, it is alot more fun to zip around. (And I still get about 24mpg...)

I have used these techniques before for big savings when it was absolutely necessary. Once, when I was a teenager (about a million years ago), I had to drive from DC to Columbus Ohio on 20 bucks. I used every trick in the book to improve my mileage...coasting down long hills in neutral, tailgating trucks, driving super conservative. I sweated out the last hundred miles or so, but I made it with a couple bucks in my pocket.

Im getting great economy to date.

Best of 38.7 MPG over 75 miles of 50-70mph A roads and consistently solid 37.6 over a 360 mile 70-80MPH motorway slog.

In fairness I do that many miles Im good at driving smoothly and economically and planning ahead but its still surprised me.
