Well, it was a trade-in at a Mazda dealership. So they did a quick PPI I guess. I didn't pay for it.

They repaired it at their own cost, which I think is fair. So all good now.

And yes, I'm pretty sure the person who traded it in was aware of the leak. I mean it's not something that happened overnight!

Back to the story...

First item I needed to take care of are the tires. The all-season Michelins were not going to cut it.

I ordered a set of lightweight wheels and entry-level performance tires. I didn't go to wild right from the start as I want to learn the car dynamics progressively.

The Fast FC04a weight only 16lbs in 17x8.



The Firestone Indy 500 were well rated and cheap enough in 225-45-17.

This should be a great upgrade on a budget.

I can also go 245-section on the 8in-wide rims. We'll see next year...

Next up: brakes!

I decided to go again with a budget option. I found a set of used F30 calipers, the grey ones that go with the 340mm rotors. Perfect, as I dont think the blue calipers with the larger rotor would fit my 17" wheels.



They came with brand and Zimmerman rotors and OEM pads that still have a lot of meat left. I'll start with that and see if I need more agressive pads later.

But first, I needed to test fit to make sure they cleared everything.



Damn close, but they fit



Looking good

I then ordered S/S brake lines and good fluid (Castrol SRF). While waiting for that, I decided to bling it up.

Next: suspension

I hesitated for while. I wasn't sure which direction to go. I wanted coilovers but they were so expensive.

But then an ad popped up for a set of used Ground Controls. Perfect!



The install wasn't too bad. Started with the rears:



And then did the fronts the next day.

Ran into an issue where the top of the front shocks would hit the strut brace under load. I temporarily put spacers in there but I'll be going for the 1M strut brace which clears the top of the struts.

I expected the ride to be much harsher. But it's not bad at all. There's still room to increase spring rate if needed. We'll see.

So this is where I'm at at the moment.

I have a couple more parts I received that I'll be installing in the next 1-2 weeks and then it's off to the race track!

I have a studs conversion kit for the wheels. I find bolts so annoying! Plus it will be useful when I go wider tires and need spacers.

I have polyurethane RSFB (Powerflex black series).

And I need to install the front calipers, all SS lines, and flush the whole thing with Castrol SRF.

I also have a 3-stage intake manifold sitting on a shelf. I want to do a few track days as-is before this upgrade.

Oh, got it. I thought you meant you paid a BMW dealer to do a PPI and they missed that. Glad it all worked out in the end! I'm on a similar path to you... my 128i was my DD for 4 years but has recently been retired to fun car duty.

Looking good! That oil pan is ridiculous. I'd do a super thorough look-over on the car and see if you find anything else you can get them to fix for free. If they "missed" that during the PPI, either the attending mechanic is a ****ing moron or they didn't even lift it off the ground.

So the car is in the shop right now getting the last few bits installed before hitting the track.

I'm having them install the PU subframe bushings. And since I'm very busy with work at the moment I also asked them to install the big calipers, stainless brake lines, flush the system with Castrol SRF, and install the studs kit.

Hopefully this will be enough to have some fun for the rest of the season! I still have the 3-stage IM which I guess I'll swap this winter and flash with the 130i software as a start.

I'll then look into weight reduction and adding a few more HP

Time for an update!

So, the big calipers turned out to have seized bleeder screws. The shop I brought my car to tried everything but couldnt get them out. They recommended taking the calipers to a machine shop to have them drilled out and retapped.

I dont want to mess with one of the most important part of the car so I sourced another set of calipers. They just came in today so I'll be starting over with these.

In the mean time, I decided to do a resonator and secondary cats delete...





It already sounds much better, but way too quiet for my taste. I'm planning on replacing the muffler with a 135i muffler.

Next, I decided to tackle the 3-stage intake manifold.

With the airbox out, I also did the charcoal filter delete.

Found a pretty bad leak at the eccentric shaft sensor which I'll need to take care asap.



Back together...



Hacking time!



I flashed the stock 130i software and off I went for a test drive.

First impression: holy sh*t! It cant be THAT much faster I'm guessing the adaptations were reset and the accelerator pedal is much more sensitive. At low rpm the difference is HUGE. From 2k to 3k there's a bit of hesitation and from 3.5k it picks up nicely.

When I'm done tinkering with the exhaust and intake, and maybe do the MILVs, I'll flash with a proper tune. But for now, this will do

I can recommend Porterfield R4-S pads. Super quiet, awesome pedal feel, low dust. They also have a race pad (the R4) that is compound-compatible, so you don't need two sets of rotors, and they make all the right race pad noises

I love the green, BTW! I need to get my calipers painted, but I don't have the time to take the car out of service to do so...

Never heard of Porterfield, but will definitely check them out. Where do you get yours?

This is not my daily driver so I don't mind the odd noises

I did a quick job for the paint. I received the bare calipers and 24h later they were painted and installed. If you take them out in the evening, clean, prep and paint them. You can let them dry overnight. Ready to install in the morning. Not much downtime required.

I got mine from Zeckhausen Racing. There are a few other companies that carry them (can't remember right now).
