I wouldn't change it out until it becomes recalled. If it creates no issuses and it is only the minor inconvience that I think it is, why do it. Do you all realize how much of a job it is to replace a cylinder head? The possible implications it has for resale aswell?
idk, just my .02.

I won't get concerned about it unless the noise doesn't go away. Even then, it's more of an annoyance than anything. I'll keep driving it until they issue a recall, or the engine blows, which I seriously doubt would happen due to slight valve noise. Just drive the SOB!

Now I am all stressed out again should I not have it done? I did get BMW to get notes signed off by the owner of the dealership that ensures my car will not be devalued based on this work so that my service records are not indicidive of a problem... ughhhhhhhhhh |

BMW needs to get there shit together. They have had the same fix for the 2006 330i for around a year now. I just picked up my 09 last night and it has the same ticket that my 330i had.
I would rather not have to take my brand new 135i in to have this new head put in but I am pretty sure I will. This noise is VERY loud and makes the car sound like a !@#^$% diesel. Why is it that they have not made the correct head to begin with in the 135i!?!? |

This is about a 128i. NOT A 135i. The heads are completely differant. |

Well I have the tick in my 135i. So explain that...ever think its an issue with BMWs in general? I've heard about this on older 3 series.

Direct injection (like the N54 has) is loud. It's a lot like a diesel. You don't have anthing to worry about. Your fuel system runs at over 1500PSI, compared to about 40PSI for normal engines. The injectors are noisy. |

i hear my engine tick sometimes too, like tonight for instance but im not going to take my car in because i know they will probably blame it on one of my modifications.

Yeah. What you're hearing in the 135i most likely isn't lifter noise (which can be bad) but ijector noise. There's been a lot of talk over the last few years about how to make direct injection engines quiet. It's not easy from what I've read, because of the high pressures. People don't want their cars to sound like diesels no matter how good they run, but that's exactly what DI sounds like. |

Sorry to tell you there guy but I know what valve tick is vs injector clicking and the thread title says 1 Owners! not just 128i. My point above is still very valid and BMW needs to start putting the correct head in these units from the factory. They have known about this problem for a long while yet still keep building cars with the older version head. Its a simple check valve in the head that fixed the problem but they have to replace the entire head.

Its the first Direct Injected car I've driven that was this loud at idle. But what the hell, it sounds great at redline.

The service bulletin that has been posted is very specific about which engines this involves, and the N54 isn't one of them. I would suggest that you have something else going on. |
