Charge pipe cracked

So to my charge pipe blew off and when I went to put it back I noticed that it actually cracked off! The clip and sleeve is still attached but the pipe is hanging loose off. I'm scheduling an appointment for Monday but just wanted to know if it's bad to drive it to the dealer about 15 miles away with the pipe off? Also it's under warranty correct? Thanks.

If you stay out of boost, you should be ok for drive to dealer.

The stock charge pipe is a pos -- it either pops off or breaks.

Lots of good aftermarket alternatives out there.

That's between you and your dealer (and, in turn, BMWNA).

Obviously, you'd lose your warranty coverage for the charge pipe.

This seems to be very common with 1M's.

I wonder IF BMW designed the charge pipe intentionally to break/crack instead of something more expensive like a intercooler or turbo vane(s) ???

I remember years ago when I had a Calloway turbo'd VW the spark plugs were designed to MELT before the pistons! No kidding.

Real easy and I'm a novice when it comes to these things. Took me about an hour to install mine.

the stock airbox just pulls off right? no screws or bolts?

Sure does.

Only trick is to reach behind the lower part of the airbox (on corner facing firewall toward drivers side) to pull the cables up and off. Also, you need to remove the diverter valves. Once that's done, it's cake.

Not really a kit, just a single piece.

I like the Evolution Racewerks and CP-E designs best.

At dealer now, I asked about an aftermarket pipe so I wouldn't have to keep coming in, he said it would affect my warranty so don't do it till the warranty is over. Anyone else have. Different conversation with their dealership?

I mean fact is that if you replace it you wont have to go into the dealer. Or you can keep going in and having it fixed. Nothing can void any warranty unless it is proven after diagnosis to have created the issue.

I went to my dealer for an oil change and to get the wastegates looked at and all I have installed is the ER CP; he comes back and says this voids your warranty with this installed. Put me in the system that modifications were done to the car and now can't get anything replaced under warranty (engine wise). I responded, "If anything was wrong with the car and that piece didn't cause the issue it would still be voided?" He said, yep. I was going to fight with him but decided it's not really worth my time when nothing was apparently wrong with the engine. So yea, depends on your dealer.

Can we make a sticky for this topic on every forum please. You can install ANY aftermarket part and by LAW it will not void warranty. The case that set this president was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuso...s_Warranty_Act. Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act

Here is the catch with that. It is up to the dealer / company to prove the part caused the failure. That means while the LAW is on your side it comes down to HOW MUCH FIGHTING you are willing to do. While you could ultimately win and show the part did not cause the "said failure". It is how much time and effort are you willing to put in to prove you case.
