Wow, I’m so glad I found this post. I have been dealing with the same issue for a month.
I just cleaned everything and am about to put it back together.

Had this happen to me. Check your ground strap wire near the driver side motor mount and see if it corroded. If that's not it check to see if the positive strap cable near the metal red charging thing is tightened.

I had this same problem on my X1. I was unable to diagnose it, my local foreign auto repair shop was unable, and it took 2 trips to the dealer to finally get it solved. My problem turned out to be the TPMS module that was going bad. This module is located behind the right rear wheel (you remove the carpeted wheel well to access). As several other people have commented, the cause of the failure was most likely exposure to water (not sure why BMW would put it here to begin with). It is very easy to replace, but you have to have a coding tool to program it. I hope that helps someone, I know these Bimmer posts have helped me solve a lot of problems in the past.
