$58075 - $3913 = $54162 This is the ED price of an M3 Sedan Without ANY options at all, none, nothing. So how many are going to order an M3 without any options at all?

Add anything like Competition Package $2500
DCT $2900
Convenience Package $2900
Etc.

It's easy to see just how quickly an M3 get very expensive compared to a loaded 1M
You are wrong. Base price(wholesale) on 2011M3 sedan is 47400

BMW BLOG price sheets says 2011 MY. Is the 1M going to be 2011 or 2012?

Base price is MSRP not Wholesale. Wholesale is what the Dealer pays for the car. Just go to BMW's web site and start building the M3 you will see the prices I used there.

I have a 128i convertible and think its shape, looks and size are quite feminine IMO. I'll probably trade it in for an M3 really soon. As much as I like the 1-series, and now the 1M, I would never choose it over an M3. (On a side note I recently had this change of mind when I saw a 135i was parked next to a Mercedes SLS AMG) Can't compare them but the SLS's image is burned into my mind. Better start investing....

Before all you guys get warm and fuzzy about the ED pricing, the real issue is to find a dealer that:

1. Has enough cars allocated to fill your order
2. Will actually grant you the ED price (considering ED cars are still taken out of his inventory).

Think about it from his perspective, why would he if he knows he is getting X cars, and Y people on the list, with X<Y by a big margin. Sure, he would like to 'help you out'', but at the end of the day it is dollars and cents (and sense). Too bad really, a fully optioned 1///M with ED would cost you under $50K ($49,980 to be exact if you add Premium, Convenience, Heated Seats, Paint, and Destination).

If there wasn't a 'limitation' issue, I am sure most dealers will settle for ED MSRP, options at invoice, and they still get a decent 7% margin, and you get a close to fully loaded car for $49K. Patience is a virtue, early adopters will likely pay full list, with things (hopefully) easing on after the initial rush.

Why wouldn't a dealer sell an ED car at ED MSRP? Their margin should be the same as when they sell the car at regular MSRP to a US buyer.

Just base, but you can try to get options at invoice. Looking quickly at all of them, there is about a $690 invoice-to-MSRP difference on the options list

This is only true if you pay MSRP but I know plenty of people including myself who got their M3 for the ED invoice price plus all options at invoice.

I believe they priced the 1M a little too closely to the M3 but I feel BMW is targeting different groups with these cars so it really doesn't matter and shouldn't affect sales of the 1M.

Ed cars do not effect dealers allocation of cars it is an extra. this is my understanding, when I did it in 07

It's 2011 now No offense intended, but in this case they have said it will be coming out of allocations (as the E9x M3 was at startup of its production).
