Modified 135i from Switzerland
Hi guys,
I'm from Switzerland (my apologies for the bad english), got my 135i E82 four days ago and just discovered your forum! I previously had a E81 three doors, 120d (diesel). I enjoyed it except for the engine, good, but way too noisy! And I needed to come back to normal sound So, here u go with the first picture, you see the old one (the white one on the right) and of course the new 135i. Classic grey this time, I'm done with white Of course I had to go for some options: - Automatic gearbox (incredibly fast) - Sports seats - M wheels (261) - USB/Ipod interface - HiFi/DSP sound system - Xenon - Sunroof - etc... Plus I also went for the sport exhaust from BMW Performance: The sound is amazing! It seems that this option cancels one of the intermediate silencer, right? I took a picture this afternoon: Anyway, I'm happy to be here on this forum with you! And here are some pictures made in the country: A+

Hi guys,
Some words about the auto gearbox. In fact I was a fan of manual transmition, but now that auto gearboxes became that good (and BTW faster than me!) it's the only choice for me. I tested the manual one but was very disapointed. No progress at all in this area, and worse than the one I had in my old Porsche, back in 1989! Then I tested the auto in both 135i and 335i. The one in 135i looked much faster so I wrote to ZF to know a bit more about these gearboxes, and surprisingly they replied to all ma questions, cool! So, basically: - 335i and 135i share the same gearbox, the ZF 6HP21 second and last generation of ZF 6 speeds gearbox - BMW internal code for this gearbox is 6HP19TÜ (Technische Überarbeitung = Technical Revision). - There are 3 modes of operation for this gearbox, confort, sport and super sport. It is very possible that BMW updated the gearbox software for the 135i in order to make it faster. - This gearbox is design to handle 400Nm maximum. - The engine upgrade proposed by BMW Perfomance (326HP and 450Nm) is approved by ZF, but it is above technical specs of the anti-vibrating system for the clutch. So it may generates vibrations in specific cases, but this is still approved and therefore guarantee by ZF. - The engine upgrade from Alpina (360HP and 500Nm) requires the gearbox software to be updated in order to make the gearbox more robust. But anyway the guarantee from ZF is lost with that upgrade. - Find here a small presentation of that gearbox: 6HP21.pdf. You'll see that shifting down requires 80ms (below perception!), that it can directly shift from 6 to 2 or 6 to 4, 5 to 3, etc... in 80ms also. Shifting up requires up to 300ms. Shifting down (costing mode) requires up to 200ms, and this is where BMW improved the speed of the gearbox. On the 135i, when shifting down (coasting mode) the engine accelerates (gives a bit of gaz, nice at the exhaust!) so that it accelerates the shifting also. Finally this gearbox is much faster than I can be with the manual one, and especially with the one that the 135i receives, which is not that good, or at least not as good as it should be in this kind of car, in 2009... To finish with some figures, find a table below showing differences between that new gearbox, the previous generation on a 645i and the DSG from VW. Note: It seems the manual gearbox can handle less torque as the BMW Perfomance engine upgrade is limited to 430Nm in this case. A+

Hi NTTY, welcome to the E82-club.
And congratulations with your choice. It is really an incredible car. In the meanwhile mine (februari) has 5250 Km on the counter and so far nothing but fun. I chose a full option Space Grey with red leather and as well, for the first time the auto gearbox. And indeed it is very fast. As you said, me too, I must comfirm, faster than the manual version which I tried before buying the 135i. After 40 years of manual gearboxes it was a very hard decision but certainly the right one, so I am very happy with it. Thanks a lot for that tecnical presentation of the gearbox. A very interesting documentation to keep. Wish you nothing but fun with that amazing car. Pol. |

Nice pictures and nice car. As long as you're happy with the automatic transmission, that's all that matters. If it were me though, I know I would miss rowing through the gears too much.

Hi thanks to you guys!
Tonight I tested a bit the car in a nice area I know very well. And it seems that engine and brakes are much above what the chassis can handle. I was far from pushing the car to its limits, but the chassis looked already over limits. Suspensions look too soft and body was not well controlled. Did you have the same feeling with your cars? Thank you

I already contacted DPE for the rims I like some of their models. But first thing is to lower the car! I'm happy I have some work to do on this car to make it "mine"
