Water Pump or Something Else?
Hi all,
I own a 2009 135i, approx 171000 km (Canada). Had it since day one. In 2015, I had the water pump fail, and subsequently repaired. Now here is the weird part. For past 6'ish months, after driving my car for 30-40 minutes, fall, winter or spring, the rad fan will turn on full blast, to the point where it sounds like an airplane engine. This will happen without fail, every day, to and from work or play. About 4 weeks ago I had the yellow 'coolant' light come on the dash, and I lost power. I pulled over, waited a few minutes, started the car and was able to drive home. No red coolant light, nothing. I checked the coolant and it was fine. Fast forward 3 weeks to late last week, and the same exact thing happened. Yellow (not red) coolant light, pull over, turn off car, wait, turn on, start driving (still no power really) but after 10 seconds, full power and I go home. The rad fan maxing out seems to be a sign that the waterpump is at fault, but this has been happening for 6+ months. I can't imagine that being normal. I also don't want to spend $1200ish CAD to replace the pump/thermostat if that was never the issue. So, can someone please tell me what the heck may be happening here? Is it the waterpump, or is it something else? Also, I did check for codes with a friends reader, and nothing came up. Thanks in advance, Marv

How many miles since the last water pump was put in? 4 years... how often did you change the coolant during that time?

No faults?
Did you use a scanner that can read BMW faults, or just a generic OBD fault reader? Sure sounds like the water pump. Was the thermostat replaced at the same time? |

Going to do some converting here but I think ~35k-40k miles since pump replacement. Also, I changed the coolant once since that time like 2 years ago.

And yes, the thermostat was replaced at the same time.

If you don't get any codes, check the following:
Make the water pump do it's automatic bleed procedure, if it doesn't do anything then your pump is dead. If it does do something, make sure your radiator isn't blocked by anything. If it's not blocked by anything then it's possibly your thermostat. |

Also check connections to the thermostat, water pump and fan.
You can unplug the fan and you should notice the water pump go full speed, as a precaution to cool if the fan is inoperable. You can unplug the thermostat and should get a notification, same as with pump and well don't run the engine more than a few seconds like that clean the connectors and ensure they are well seated. Little gremlins like this are often simple mistakes on reassembly from work done. usually gunk in an electrical connector. I 303 all mine when I take them off so they are clean and have easy on and off to confirm it is fully seated.

Just wanted to follow up on this and close the loop in case a similar situation comes up for someone else.
The issue was actually the rad fan itself. The tech noticed two things - first that when trying to manually start the fan from his iPad system, it wouldn't start every time. Secondly, he noticed something odd about the voltages when the fan would try to start at the lower settings. I had to purchase and have them install a new rad fan which has the module built in, and voila, no more 'jet engine' or oil temperature/coolant lights on the dash. -Marv
