1M 2000 kms/1200 Mile Service Oils

Hi guys,

This seems to be fairly common place here - the dealer completely stuffed up this service on mine.

I actually flew to another state to pick up my car - do the break in and have it serviced, as I did not trust the one dealer in my state to do this and they messed up anyway. Wrong Gearbox oils & didn't even bother with the Diff Oil. They did get the Engine Oil correct though, to their credit.

Pics, if anyone is interested;
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=576032

I have searched and it there are plenty of threads about it but I think we need a final thread with consensus & perhaps a sticky on which oils are required.

Correct Oils;

Engine - 5W30 LL-04 (LL-01 for the US guys)

Gearbox - MTF-LT-5 - 2L Bottle - BMW PN: 832 221 569 69
Barrel - BMW PN: 832 221 806 97

Diff - Castrol SAF-XJ + FM (SAE 75W140 GL5 BMW) - 1.2L

Oil Filter - BMW PN: 114 275 663 27

Below are some alternatives;

Also... you can use LL-4 rated oil in a market that requires LL-1 but not the other way around! So the guys in the USA can use a LL-4 rated oil, but the euro guys should only use LL4 rated oil.

This is one reason I buy the expensive German Castrol RS Edge 0w40 (LL-4) oil for my 135i.

Dackel
MTF-LT-5 can be substituted with Pentosin FFL-3 (Porsche PDK Trasmission Oil) - I have a confirmation email on this directly from BMW Australia.

No I will ask the Independent Service Center that works on my 993 to carry out the work. Just sourcing the oils at the moment - I live in a fairly rural part of Australia - pretty hard to come by a lot of things!

You can add Castrol RS 0W40 (re-branded to EDGE sport 0W40) for the European guys

Marcel RS 0w40 is it better oil for the 1M?

I thought the 5W 30 castrol LL04 is the oil which should go in.

I was told that castrol EDGE states that it's for M engines, EDGE SPORT is different and if memory serves me right then no good for M engines.

From what I've read, there seems to be a fair bit of support for using the Castrol TWS 10W-60 oil, including an unofficial/unverified comment by a head M engineer. Considering what most owner will subject this engine to, there is probably some benefit in this.

I am most probably going to purchase a 20L drum of this directly from the distributor.

EDIT: Dackel tells us that this is completely wrong! 5W30 is the way to go it seems!

They did but they stuffed up and used incorrect oils. The whole 1M process has been a farce here in Aus. The dealers have no idea what the oils to be used are and each one seems to making it up as they go.

The dealer up here is terrible and has been known to misplace cars! So I'm a little doubtful of their ability to do anything, let alone change the oil on my differential.

That is 100% the wrong oil (TWS) to use in a 1M!!!! The 1M uses the same oil that a 135i uses, namely BMW's full synthetic 5w30 LL1 oil.

BMW NA has even put a decall under the hood stating the correct oil to use! Here is a picture of M3 Adjuster's decall.

Is the above list correct?

YES, the above oil specs are correct!

I even asked the guy at the Welt delivering M3_Adjuster's 1M. He said(the SA at the Welt) that the 1M only shares the rear end... so the diff fluid is the same. He said for the trans fluid... it doesn't need to be changed as per BMW NA... but IF it were driven in Germany... it would be better to change the trans fluid at the first service (1,200 miles). And the engine oil uses the same oil as say a 135i, the BMW LL-1 Castrol full sythentic oil.

I would not get too caught up in the oil viscosities. Really, with any sythetic its a moot point - I think. Just make sure the oil is of the correct LL-1 rating for USA fuels.

Thicker oils should provide better protection for track use.
