What's this? No wheel lock key provided on a new car?
Wow, I've just found out that BMW does not provide a wheel lock key w/ a new car purchase.
I had a RFT failure, ordered new tires, and now it's sitting in my garage. My local indy ( A 'P' car guy) will install the tires for me, but I need to buy a key to remove the wheels. This should be against the law in my opinion. Dad bought the car new and we have everything provided so it wasn't a used car purchase. Looks like it will sit in the garage for another week until I can get this sorted out. I thought I'd inform you all if in case you did not know . . . . . Buy a key BEFORE you need one. Regards,

Yeah, it should be in the little area next to the battery, under the trunk mat. If that fails, just buy the cheapest 18mm socket you can find, hammer it on the lock and remove. Wheels locks are useless as any thief can defeat them with $4 of cheap sockets.

Yeah, wheel locks are pretty dumb and since a thief knows that the key has to be in the car, you'll likely have a broken window on top of the 4 missing wheels if they want them bad enough.

I think the wheel lock socket is in the little black tool bag under the trunk mat. As others have said, I removed my wheel locks as they are an inconvenience for me and no deterrent to thieves.

My 128i has wheel locks... The key is in the rudimentary tool kit located in the trunk.

Decent wheel locks are an OK deterrent to thwart the amateur thief. Naturally, a pro will get your wheels
or your vehicle or whatever if he so chooses. But if you don't think a good set of locks will send a rookie packing while you're in the restaurant, you're fooling yourself. Ask a cop. |

BMW's do not! That was some dealer add-on. BMW does sell them, but teh car does not come with them as standard.
OP - I would look inside the car. Maybe in the trunk/battery area. ?

I've checked through everything. The only items in the tool kit were a tow hook and a screwdriver ( MY 2010 )
This is a good way for the dealer to insure your return. Next thing they will be putting locks on the windshield washer filler :-) The dealer told me it will one to two weeks to get a new key ( no kidding). I took it there slowly and had them remove the lock lug bolts and replace w/ standard. My car is kept in a fairly secure facility. No charge to remove the locks, but $6.45 each (full list price) for the replacement lugs. You cannot use the Snap-on tool to break and remove them either as the outer collar rotates. A very good design. Now that I have them removed I may consider spending the $29 to get the key, maybe. I checked the window sticker and wheel locks are not listed. I did find when running the VIN through a dealer's information site that the locks and nitrogen inflation was installed at the dealer, so shame on them for not providing it. All of my 'P' cars came with the key in the tool kit from the factory, so I assumed that BMW would be the same. Never had the need to look for it until today. Thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone to check to see if they had one. Thank you. Regards,

Wheel locks are option on BMWs, go figure. I picked up a brand new genuine OEM set off ebay for $20.

I've used them before and they're a hassle, particularly if the lug is on really tight: you could damage the lug and/or the key, then you're really screwed.
