Spoiler
I believe that is the name for the lip on the trunk of a 2012 135i. Does it truly do anything or is it more for appearances?

I'd say it's pretty much for looks. If you're going fast enough to warrant a spoiler because you actually need more downforce, you'd probably want a real wing.

Mostly appearance. Although some spoilers can help a bit with gas mileage by disrupting the air drag behind the car. It definitely does virtually nothing for down force or handling though.

Thanks all for your responses. I thought it was just for appearances. What I need is a lighter foot or sand bags in the trunk. Luv the car.

A spoiler helps with performance but you need to be driving at really high speed to get any sort of improvement .
Doubt you are driving at that kind of speed on the roads.
