A friend of mine deleted the mid pipe resonator(aka N55 mids, but the front section needed to be welded up to smaller piping) along with a PE(Performance Exhaust). It sounded really nice. Lots of pops and gurgles. He recently sold the car and the first thing the new owner did was remove the mids. I really liked the sound.

I would say IF you want better sound from a 128i... first thing is to buy a PE. See how you like it. I bet it is sufficient. Plus the 128i PE are a few hundred less than for 135i's.

The PE is a less baffled muffler, so not really.

OP I read someone did that it droned a lot. Why not just replace the muffler?

With all due respect to PE lovers, that's the last thing I'd do. You could be half-way to a Stage 3 intake for what the PE costs; and you'll get a serious power increase, unlike the PE exhaust.

If you want a quick sound improvement, simply cut off the muffler and weld a straight pipe in there with some dual tips...you'll have a nice sporty sound with some gurgling off the throttle...I had this setup until I added AA headers; it was now too loud...a Borla stainless straight-thru muffler (under $100) replaced the straight pipe...there's something about Borla's...they have such a throaty, expensive sound...

I have headers and a muffler delete. The muffler delete came first and honestly it sounds just as good as any exhaust you can buy. Most exhausts are glorified muffler deletes anyways. I say try that first. I kept the resonator and the 2ndary cats just so it would not be obnoxious loud and I think it sounds perfect.
