ASA GT1 wheels

I've been interested in these wheels since I saw them on TireRack several months ago. I'm a big fan of the y-spoke style: Bayern Mesh, CSL reps, Breyton GTS, etc.

I searched and it doesn't look like anyone has put GT1's on their 1'er yet, but this guy has them on his VW GTI: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4346175

I think they'd look pretty good on our cars.

They've just been added to the list of wheels available for the 1'er. When I got my wheels last summer they weren't available otherwise I would have gotten them.

It's an outstanding looking wheel and ASA has a very good reputation. I expect these to be one of our most popular wheels for the upcoming winter season due to cost/looks.
They'll be slightly less popular for the summer because they are not staggered.

They come in 17x8, ET40, 24lbs and 18x8, ET40, 25.6lbs. They are low pressure cast/shot peened with a 4 year structural warranty/ 1yr finish warranty.

I really like these too. ASA makes great wheels, are they still licensed by BBS?

I had a set of ASA JH3s on my STi through 4 winters and they are still in like new condition.

Gill, be sure to let us know if you plan on putting a winter tire package together with these!

Anybody have pictures of the ASA GT1 on the 1 series (preferably a darker car but any pictures would be great)? I am thinking about it for a winter setup, but I am worried that the silver on it might be a little too bright for a BSM 135. Also, does the BMW center cap fit in the wheel?

center cap does not fit. I tried it last week. It's a tiny bit too big.

I am looking at this for winter too, thinking of the 17" silver setup for a Titanium silver 135i and haven't found any good pictures yet.

Thanks again for checking the cap Gill. I wonder if we can find some of those stick on emblems, will have to wait and see how big the ASA caps are and try to find some which fit it.

Has anyone been able to figure out if the stick-on emblems will work with the 17s yet?

I ordered a set of GT2s for winter...

ordered a set of 60mm (the diameter of the stock ASA stickers) resin stickers from the bay. Once they show up I'll post some pics.

I did a similar thing with some old Moda R6 wheels. The stock caps accepted a 58mm concave BMW sticker very well. The only thing that shows is the edge of the caps are a lighter gray compared to the powdercoat, so it stands out a little bit more than I'd like.

I got mine from socalmotorsports on eBay and found their shipping fast and service good:

Looks great, what size are the tires? Any fitment or quality issues?

Tires are 225/40/18. It may be that the tires are narrow fitment being winter tires, but I wouldn't go any narrower on this wheel. The tires are pretty stretched (in fact, if you set the wheel flat on the floor, the metal at the back of the wheel will touch, rather than the tire).

Fitment is fine with stock suspension. Quality of the wheels is average. The paint has minor imperfections and has already chipped in one spot. The aluminum centering ring/clip design is absolutely infuriating. It took me 3+ tries to put each wheel on the hub before I could do it without the retaining clip popping off--kind of like trying to thread a needle with a fifty pound weight attached to the thread. Overall, I'd say they are slightly less quality than I expected for the price. I had a better experience with the Rota's on my Subaru, which were the same price or cheaper.

Thanks for the quick response, I'm looking at them for winter wheels as well. It's a shame there are imperfections, but I may still spring for them anyway at their current price - none of the other rims offered in that range look very good on the 1 at all in my opinion... I'll let you know if I find any tricks for the hub-centric rings, or alternatively I'll probably rant about fighting with them.

I think they are a great look for the 1er. I prefer the look over any of the aftermarket wheels I've seen except for CSL clones. No real trick to the rings--you just have to line the wheel up exactly with the hub before pushing it against the hub. If you try to slide the wheel around to get it to pop onto the hub, the ring clip will fall off.

The GT2 are a machined finish, where GT1 are painted. Go to tirerack and click back and forth between the GT1 and GT2 and you'll see the GT2 has "sharper" looking edges as well as a bright "machined" looking finish. The spokes on the GT1 have a slight bit more rounding on them and are *painted* in bright silver (also available in black).

i'd rather go with a more concave shape and darker finish. but I also don't want the one with lower quality if one tends to chip more than the other...

which one is the right one then? seems from the pictures that the GT1 would be, but you can't really trust those pictures...

quality wise are they the same?

Those are identical wheels in terms of production processes. There is no difference.
The only way they differ is the finish. The GT2 has a machined face and won't be quite as resistant to salts, road chemicals, etc. if they're going to be used in winter conditions. The GT1 has the painted finish beneath the clear coat.

We're splitting hairs, but that's the difference.

I'm going to get these for my seldom used winter wheel/tire setup.
I won't be driving my car too much in Dec, Jan, or Feb..but I will be seeing some daily driving highway miles for the majority of March.

I'll be going with the GT1 in size 16". I have a carbio and the stock wheels are 16".
I'm not going to really mess around with wheels and such (I have 4 sets of wheels for my E30; BBS(2), OZ, & Racing Dynamics.

The new 1 series is supposed to be my daily driver but I got a economy car too, so I'll probably rely heavily on that car towards the start of December. My 1 month-old 1 series will most likley be delegated as the weekend fun car. Still I need an extra set of wheels & I need winter tires. The ASA GT1 is good enough for now.

If I start to mod my car..I'd go for suspension first! Then change the tires to a lower profile. 215/50/16 or 225/45/16 (whatever works best). From there sway bars, wheel spacers, Dinan strut bar, BMW performance exhaust, and the BMW performance intake setup.
Nothing too crazy. If I go for more wheels down the road I'd get 18's, but that wouldn't be for atleast 3 years. I just got my car.
Wheels is the last thing. I'm not gunning to have larger rims yet.
