Replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, now cylinder 4 misfires

I ordered N55 spark plugs & ingition coils from FCP Euro. Disconnected battery, replaced spark plugs & ignition coils with new ones now cylinder 4 misfires (P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire detected). I didn't use any dielectric/grease. I made sure its torqued at 17 lb-ft with a husky torque wrench.

In order to diagnose, I removed the spark plug & ignition coil in 4th cylinder and replaced with cylinder 1. Now 1 misifres. Replaced cylinder 1 with original coil/spark plug. No misfire so far but I hear minor hesitation & very minor occasional shake when idling.

My car is all stock.
What should I do?

Sounds like either a bad coil or plug. Try replacing just the plug or just the coil and if see if the misfire returns. That way you can narrow down which one is causing the problem.

Did you gap your plugs when you installed them?

Are you sure you got N55 plugs? Single ground?

No, I didn't gap them since they were pre-gapped. Let me try that. thanks!

Just be careful gapping them and make sure to use the right tool! The ground electrode is very fragile and can break if you try to use the coin-style gap tool

I recommend only to use BMW spark plugs. They will say "BMW Bosch" on the ceramic element. Aftermarket plugs have been known to cause misfires. That is why I will only use spark plugs bought at my local dealership.

Also... when you snap the electrical connector back into the coil pack.. its easy for it to get miss aligned. Check out this video by Cobb...

I'm using BMW bosch OEM plugs.

I re-gauged all new spark plugs to 0.02".
Still misfires in cylinder 1.
Thinking its faulty plug/coil in cylinder 1, I replaced the new ones with old ones. Misfire is still only in cylinder 1. Also I can smell gas on the tips of the coil (both in case of new and old spark plug/coil combo).

What should I try next?

You replaced with the old coils or plugs?

Next, try swapping just the coils from cylinders 1 and 2. If the misfire follows, then you know it's a bad coil. If not, then it's likely the plug.

So, exact timeline.

Installed new plugs and coils.
Get misfire on cylinder 4.
Swap plug/coil between cylinder 1 and 4
Misfire now on cylinder 1.
Swap ALL old plugs/coils, still misfire on cylinder 1.

Something does not sound right.

Yep.

So... you had a misfire before you changed parts.

I think you need to change the coil on cylinder #1 with a known good coil.

Misfires can be: plugs, coils and then fuel injectors AND then carbon buildup!

BUT... since your misfire moved from cylinder #4 to #1... that is a plug/coil - since that is what you moved/switched.

Just move one(of those parts) and see what happens.

Have you checked for codes? Maybe something else is going on here >?

Dackel
2EFE random/multiple misfire
2EFF cylinder 1 misfire
2EE0 Combustion misfiring, several cylinders: Fuel injection deactivation,
2EE4 - Combustion misfiring, cylinder 4: damaging exhaust gas

What is the right spark plug gap for stock bosch bmw oem plugs? I kept it at 0.02". May be I should increase it to 0.028"
Should I try DME reset adaptations?

UPDATE: No matter what coil/plug i put in cylinders 1 & 4, they both misifire

Did your engine misfire before you changed the plugs & coils ?

Did you clear those codes and they came back ?

Also what index level are your injectors ? I think #12's are the latest. ?

Good catch. I thought he had a N54. My fault... I didn't look at his sig/user name.

taranfx I would cross check your part numbers for the spark plugs. Sometimes parts guys hand out the wrong plugs. N55 and N54 plugs have different specs.

The correct plugs for your car are: BOSCH ZR5TPP33S BMW p/n 12120037582

Hey guys,
Im not getting a misfire, but I am getting a DME code:
2FB3 Ignition Cylinder 1 outside combustion tolerance
There are no threads to be found on this specific DME code.....

I don't feel any noticeable difference in the way the car drives but what I did notice is that while the car is idling, if I put my finger on top of the first coil pack I can feel the combustion vibration/knock but I don't feel anything on the rest of the cylinder coils?

Plugs have been replaced less than 5k km ago. I also checked plug #1 and it looks fine and was still gapped at 0.22.

Any suggestions?
