Taking the 135i to Drift Day - Drifting close to the wall & a broken bumper
The temptation to drive sideways is difficult to resist. So drifters and peculiar driving enthusiasts such as myself very much welcome the opportunity to go on the skidpad. It is undoubtedly a day of therapy.
Why skidpad? Practice drifting with zero risk of car damage...unless you have a strong desire to drift as close as possible to the wall. Because closer to the wall is more fun! Yeah, what a strange concept. I completely understand the guy in the Nissan. Anyway it was a great day at the skidpad. Here are fun moments throughout the day. Who knew shredding tires could be so addicting Easily the best drifters out there on this day were the multiple Nissan 240sx's and the BMW 323is. The 135i doesn't like to drift...lol. It's either stay straight or spin-out, but that's what makes drifting this car more interesting.

Looks like fun! Are you on the stock diff?

I'll eventually retire my 1'er from track work and turn it into a drifter. Though, my E46 is my current drift beater. Drifting is the most fun you can have in a car without taking your pants off.

Quaife
With some proper mods and tuning, I know the 135i can make a great streetable drift car, as seen on 3diablo3's videos on youtube. Surprised there aren't more 1ers being drifted out there. Most fun for sure, especially on worn track duty street tires that would be uselessly disposed otherwise |

I'm a bit disappointed that you still didn't find drifting very enjoyable even with the helical diff. I am very close to getting an M Factory helical but now I'm hesitant

My bad for the confusion. I was just poking fun at this car, when compared to the other cars out there. With the Quaife, it does drift properly for sure, but I should be more specific.
I've driven some of the other cars, and those get sideways very easily and are more forgiving once you do get sideways. As we all know, the 135i wants to understeer by nature, and that's the main reason "it wants to stay straight or spin out", but fortunately, there are ways to address that, such as a stiffer rear sway bar, more front camber, getting rid of the staggered tire setup, stiffer springs in the rear, etc... I should note in this video I was drifting on an old staggered 235/265 tire setup, so that didn't help... Quote:
3diablo3, as mentioned above, drifts with a Quaife as well and he owns it like a beast going sideways in 4th gear at the track. My 135i still has much of the stock understeer left in, whereas his is setup to oversteer - all depends on your suspension tuning |

I wish, in retrospect, that I opted for a more aggressive differential, like a clutch-type, instead of the MFactory helical diff. It doesn't lock up that tight, and, at this point, I value a tighter, faster action, like a 1.5-way unit offers. Going back and forth between my drift cars with welded diffs and the 1'er with the MFactory diff is disappointing, dynamically.

Some background, I had a fully built drift car years ago and miss the sideways. I'd love to get my 1er to a point where I can at least play around with it once in a while and not become completely infuriated by the e-diff.

If that's too much to handle in one swing, just buy an MFactory clutch-type diff. My MFactory unit has been reliable, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another of their products.
