!!! accident!! anyone know what might be broken?

I was coming home tonight and the roads were extremely slippery (i know sounds bad already) and I am almost home when I turned at my street but then I started slipping like crazy. I tried to countersteer but my car just went straight sideways.

Then there was the median. It was at a corner so the median was a thinner in width (but not any lower) than the middle of the median. I went sideways but then I started going forwards again because I had turned the wheel to countersteer i think. I went straight over the median at around 20+ speeds(hopefully no faster than 35) and my car pretty much jumped it. Hit front wheels, then the rear and then I was over it.

I checked around the car and saw no cosmetic damage but it was dark. The wheels seemed okay too and same with the brakes. I had to get home and I was in the middle of nowhere so I reluctantly took my car about a mile to my apartment.

What I found wrong was the steering wheel was way off center but thats about it. I didnt want to push anything so I didnt but the engine did seem weird and so did the handling and brakes. I dont know what happened physically to the car. I am pretty sure something must have gotten damaged but cannot figure it out.

Should I take my car to the dealership in the morning to see whats wrong? Could I really have gotten through it w/o any damage and just need the steering fixed? What could have broken? Cost of repair?

Sorry for such lack of information. It is too dark outside to see anything and I didn't feel anything drastic as I was driving home. I don't really know what I am expecting from this post but I am just freaked out

Take it straight to the dealer, so they can put it on a lift and see what happened

They may raise his rates, depending on his past history with them. So he should see what the cost is first and then weigh whether or not to pay it out of pocket.

This sounds bad dude. I know there are lots of rain in houston, we have not had rain for several weeks. I am glad to see the rain but it causes alot of havoc for drivers. Hope you get it check out by the dealer. How come DTC and DSC did not kick in? How fast was you going before you started feeling the skid?

How did you slide like that? Did you have the DTC turned off?

It doesn't matter if the DTC is on or not if you are going too fast for a turn. When you get into a slide with all wheels you are toast unless you have lots of room to compensate. He didn't. It is called driving too fast for conditions.

Yep, your insurance will probably go up. You may want to pay out of pocket and keep them out of it. Go to the dealer or someone you can trust to look at it. Sounds like it may be pretty expensive to be honest.

Took the car to the dealer just now and this is what they have told me so far.

Front right wheel is bent and the tire has a bubble so they told me those have to be replaced(anyone know where I can get a single 162 wheel/tire?). They didn't see anything else but they told me they would have to do an alignment to check the suspension so I had to get them to do that which was 200bucks.

I am actually in austin right now and we had some extreme thunderstorms last night. There was lots of hail but luckily I didnt get any damage from that.

I did have DTC inactive when this happened. I wasnt going very fast at all and the turn was really wide so I didnt even think twice about my car losing control but here I am with a broken car so all I can really say is that it was my own fault.

Best case scenario nothing else is wrong with the car and it will cost me no more than 1300 but with my luck today I think it will probably be closer to 3000. Just pessimistic estimates from my tired and worn out imagination though so things may work out.

Looks like I will have to get a part time job to pay this off since I am a student right now.

weekend plans down the drain and summer doesnt look too great either. What a day...

thanks for the advice guys. I really appreciated it when I was totally freaking out.

I was going about 25mph when I turned but I usually accelerate a little through the turn so that might've been the cause of the slide. I dont think we have seen a lot of rain until just recently so the roads are slick with oil+water too. I was almost hydroplaning as I was driving home and that should have told me to be more mindful but I guess I had too much confidence and ended up committing some really bad boo boo shit

hahha... i've done that about 3 times in 3 different cars. at BEST your alignment is messed up. At worse, you've got busted tie rods, bent control arms... or the worst is if the rear subframe is jacked. basically none of these parts can be fixed by bending it back... or at least no decent shop would recommend it. you gotta get all new parts --and on a bimmer that's $$$$$. to give you an idea, one control arm and two tie rods was about $1200 incl. labor for a toyota camry, and a rear subframe was about $1500 incl. labor for a vw jetta.

Take it to the dealer! You might have bent a control arm, or something? Maybe you bent a rim? You could have just knocked your wheel alignment out.

I have to ask - why did you have DTC off during a time of slippery road conditions?

bmwwheels.com has individual wheels.

If your steering wheel was way off centered when driving straight then there is a VERY good chance you bent something.

If there's that much damage to that wheel, you might have a bent king pin (aka spindle).

You can't do an alignment with one wheel damaged or missing, so buy or borrow one asap. I don't know which dealer you went to, but $200 for alignment is way too much. If you are in Austin with your car, take it to Soulspeed Performance. They are a suspension specialist and have the top of the line Hunter 811 alignment machine. A 4-wheel alingment is only $100. If you are in Houston, go to Matthew's Auto, they know their stuff.

EDIT: nevermind just read you got it checked out. Hopefully you don't need to pay for anything else.

Most important is that you were not physically hurt at all. Just a little pride and that will self heal over time, especially when you get your car back.

Take care

yeah, it's important that you're okay. That could of been a potentially much worse incident. My friend did that in his 330i and there was a curb lining the median and he hit it sideways and his car was VERY close to flipping over. Half of the car lifted in the air. He was going about 30-40 mph when he hit. Luckily it lifted in the air and came back down. Basically his whole undercarriage was bent and damage was $6,000 to fix. Did your car lift off the ground at all?

Sorry about your car and wheel. Glad that is all it is. You got off pretty lucky.

Can I ask, have you ever been to an autox, BMW CCA car control clinic, or driver's school? If not, I would suggest you go. It's a great resource.

Your alignment is obviously screwed up pretty badly. There could be some suspension damage too. Get it into the dealer and have them check it out good and align it. Examine the wheels and tires for damage while it's in the air.
