When going down hills, don't take the car out of gear and coast. If you are going down hill, leave it in gear and you will have 0 fuel consumption. As long as the revs on the tach are above 2000rpm when coasting in gear, the car's fuel injectors will shut down. So you are basically getting free power back.

Well.... when going down hill, if situation permits I take it off gear to let the bimmer goes faster. It will gain more momentum to go further without gas.

i think bmw has a con where they dont put a full tank of gas in when they give it to you, but the needle says full. because my first tank went by wayyyyyy faster then any others.

2 questions, off topic of course.

1) Is there a prize for who can start the most threads?

2) Is there a way the mods can limit how many threads someone can start?

Back on topic.

ah ha! so after break-in, gas mileage gets better eh?
thank you all for the info. Scared me for few days.

JBOO, PM me if you got a problem. I just don't understand the point of
your post. Whats wrong? Got in a fight with your wife in the morning?
Although I admire your tough-tone. Man, thats some charisma.

lux.sh, I don't need to PM you, I just wondered if there was some incentive for starting the most threads since it seems you are posting a new question every day. In fact, a little research shows you have started 42 threads in about 5 weeks, so actually a little more than 1 a day. Most of your threads are subjective questions that have been covered many times before, so rather than say RTFM or try a search, I thought I'd use a little of that charisma you mentioned and give you a subtle hint instead. I admit I may have been a little rude and possibly offended you, although it was not nearly as personal of an attack as your wife comment, so I will apologize. Continue to start as many threads as you like and I will go back to fighting with my wife. Oh wait a minute, did I say I had a wife?

First of all, YES, you need to PM if you are going to post such
personal comments like that in a thread where on going information
is being shared. Its quite rude, and its called basic manner-ism.
I don't know about you, and society theme over there, but at least
from what I've learned in my life and in my country, that is pretty rude. thanks.

Back to the main point.
I totally understand, and Honestly, I did feel the same way as you.
As I was creating threads, some of them I felt unnecessary.
but please understand, few threads I started earlier was when I
was newb to this forum and didn't quite know I was going to be
this much into this forum. Also, they include questions of when
I didn't have the car, so I wasn't as serious as how I am now.

I do apologize if it annoyed you in anyway. To defend my rights
however, I do have my own rights to say what i want. If you can't
stand that, please put me in your ignore list so you can't see my
threads or my post. I would actually appreciate that if you cant
stand me and if that'll prevent you from posting such off-topic comments in my threads.
After all, this will sound like typical american attitude, but there is
something called freedom of speech.

Anyway, now that I actually received the car, and have Read The
Fu**ing Manual as you said, I will re-consider when I make threads, and will
do more research prior to asking questions. but hey, such question
as I asked in this thread, how the hell am I supposed to find it in
owner's manual? And for other "re-asked" questions, things get
updated fast these days, and sometimes relying on old information
sucks. Thats why I asked again.

Apologize for the wife-comment, it was purely intended as a joke
not to offend you in anyway. Your sarcasm wasn't all that nice either though.

Thanks for the heads up. Will definitely keep your comment in mind next time.

-Sean

lux.sh, I'm not going to put you on the ignore list. Heck, I will probably continue to post in your threads since there always seems to be at least one hot one on the first page. As long as the mods don't limit the posts or someone else doesn't make a big deal about it, continue to post away.
On a side note, I know it's easy to jump to conclusions about someone's nationality due to their posted location. However, I'd be cautious, especially when saying things like "I don't know about you, and society theme over there, but at least from what I've learned in my life and in my country, that is pretty rude" and "After all, this will sound like typical american attitude, but there is something called freedom of speech." when you are truly not certain where the individual is from. Anyways, I'm done, it's 10:30 PM here and it's past my bedtime.

lol. No harsh feelings anyway. JBOO is just giving me some good old advices,
while I could've been slightly offended by few of his comments, but im not
stuck-minded guy, and I will listen.

MPG gets better. I went through my first tank with less than 20 mpg. Now I'm getting about 26 with mixed (highway and city, mostly city) driving. Pure highway was close to 30, and that was flying at about 75 mph.

If you have an automatic, use the sport mode sparingly. If you have a manual, be careful about unleashing all that torque every time you go from a dead start. In manual, consider using your brakes more to slow down, clutch less. Finally, enjoy the mpg you get. The Infiniti (G35 or M35) is far worse, and the Audi is only marginally better.

I owned a Chrysler PT GT (Turbo) for two years. My mpg was around 18 (mixed, highway-only was barely better!). This is way better, with about 40 more horsepower, not to mention a bucketload of other, better features.

I've been driving like a granny obviously, for proper break-in.
but it seems MPG still sucks(unless gas tank is designed differently
than the cars i've drove, where first half goes out slowly, and
last half goes out quick).

Even whenever I tap on the gas very slightly, MPG meter
goes all the way back to 12(from 50? or something).

Now my girlfriend is making fun about it.

anyone experiencing the similar result?
yeah, this happened to me too

but I hit her and she shut up

Yeah, but the engine still requires gas to keep it idling. By keeping it in gear the engine is using the momentume of the car to keep the engine running. Engine braking= no fuel
Idling= requires some fuel to keep the engine running

After 7000 miles, I have to say mine is WORSE, not better. Used to average about 19.5-20, mostly city driving by the wife. Tried keeping her in the power band by suggesting DS mode, didn't help. Now we are lucky to get to 18 on a regular basis. We reset the MPG with every fill-up. Have noticed certain gas stations really reduce that number, try to avoid them now.
Whenever I drive, I use M all the time, and still can't bring up the average more than a few 10ths.
