DS Mode

OK - hands down - DS is way cooler than D. Is it harmful to the car in any way to always drive it in this setting? Will it contribute to a shorter HPFP lifespan? I usually use just regular D but the difference between DS and D is so ridiculous that it's like 'fun' and 'awesome'!

I have my auto is MS all the time. I have 12K miles and no HPFP issues. It might lead to some extra wear on the engine components simply because its being allowed to rev higher for longer.

That being said...I leave it in D until it warms up.

Not harmful, however less economical. I used to do that all time on my Z4 until figured out that that distance I can drive on full tank much shorter. 1ser has even smaller tank..

I always drive in DS mode with manual shifts, I don't think it's bad for the engine, but it is indeed more wasteful as it holds onto lower gears longer, keeping you at higher RPMs than D would most of the time (unless you're using paddle or push/pull shifts in which case it's up to you).

I only ever drive in DS. I save alot more fuel if I drive in D but I find that D lags. The car is so much more responsive in DS and going back to D feels so slow. I'm not sure if it is detrimental to your car but as others has pointed out it probably is more wasteful and would cause long term wear and tear.

DS only uses more fuel if YOU let it use more fuel. I find if I want to be economical, I can use a fair bit less fuel than in D mode.

I always wondered how you would use the DS mode. Do you just shift it in and just drive normal or you are required to shift up and down? And what about the paddle shifters? How do you use them properly?

When you are in normal D slide to the left. It should display as SD. This allows you to drive as you would normally in D but with added benefits of Sport Mode. You do not need to change gears yourself in SD it is the same as D.

Whilst in SD if you shift up or down, or you press the paddle shifters - it will select Manual mode. It will appear as M1, M2, M3 depending on what gear you are in in. Manual mode makes you redline in each gear - ideal only for tracking/racing or if you decide to change the gears yourself by shifting up/down or using the paddle shifters. You must change the gears yourself in Manual mode as each gear will rev out to redline.

To exit from Manual mode or SD slide back to the right. The indicator in the dash should go back to D.

It will only go to redline if you let it. It is basically a manual car without manually changing gears. You can change gear at basically any time, for instance, if you wanted to be economical and save fuel, the change gears early. If you want to redline and go fast as you can, then let it take you all the way there.

Basically in DS mode, you are in charge of changing gears with 2 disclaimers. If you drop too low in revs it will downshift, and if you go too high in revs it will upshift automatically.

Cool thanks! I don't want to break her - but it's really hard not to drive her in Sport Mode 100% of the time!

No. Its still an auto. Meaning that you can hold the gas through the change. I just find myself accidentally doing it out of a manual habbit. I really need to stop that, no way its good for the transmission.
