Confirm what I already think I know! N52 Rod Knock? Video attached

This is my 2013 128i, thought I bought the car for a deal (lol!!) as it passed PMI with the exception of the valve cover gasket which I used for pricing leverage.

I've only driven around 3k out of the 124k on the clock. Now it looks like I'm gonna be dropping another N52 in it. This is far from my first BMW (E39 M5, E92 335i and my wife's current F30) but I'll be damned if this thing hasn't been the biggest pain in the ass, even more so than my sorely missed M5.

Will a LS2 fit??

Don't think it's rod knock, more likely a lifter, a common issue with this motor. So hold of on that V8, unless of course you're just looking for an excuse to drop one in for a little fun!!

Ehhhhh I'd let it run til it's nice and hot, then hold around 2-3000 rpm for a little bit to try and bleed the lifters.

Sounds too loud and inconsistent for lifters. Mine sounds like a very consistent 'cards in the bike spokes'

Can't watch the video on school internet. Buut, someone has LS-swapped an E90, which has essentially the same engine bay as our car...

Yea that was my thought too, but late last night after a couple of revs, my driveway filled up with oil when a rod must have gone through the block.

I'm pretty frustrated with the whole damn thing to be honest with you.

Just swap in a new one and be done with it.

Yea I've been hitting that pretty hard. There's several higher mileage in the area, the only problem is I'm gonna have to have a shop do it. We're just down here for the year because of work so all my tools (and my garage) are back in Georgia.

I'm seeing motors anywhere from 1100 to 2200 and I think I remember the book saying something about 23 hours to R & R. So at a minimum I'm looking at $3400.

Here's a couple of carnage pics, does anybody know what that orange thing is? Look at that sludge, this car was definitely mistreated, how it passed PPI I'll never know.

Concur. How specialized was the PPI shop? From the initial video you can see the area under the valve cover is nasty; if that area is visibly dirty, there are often ugly surprises elsewhere. Did it come with any service history?

Car appeared to be 1 owner lease buyout. I think the guy just drove the piss out of it, but followed oil change intervals and I believe this kind of sludging is a testament to the manufacturer's ill advised maintenance protocol.

I checked the history with a dealer in Miami and there was nothing out of the ordinary. 122k miles, some minor paintwork and a leaking valve cover, but the price was too good to pass up, or so it seemed!

I saw the sludge when my indy did the valve cover gasket and at the time they advised me to trade it. My wife insisted it I keep it as a commuter when we bought her new 320i rather than trade it in, so here we are.

I've been through a lot of German cars, this one so far has been the biggest headache.

PPI was a shade tree shop, so that's on me...

Well, if the rest of it is worthwhile, dropping an engine in isn't the end of the world. You can take care of (or have the shop take care of) all the common issues (VCG, OFHG, water pump, thermostat, pan gasket) before it goes in and know you're good to go for many miles to come.

I've had a close to 30-year history with BMWs, and the neglected ones are always needier (yes, following the manufacturer OCI qualifies as neglect), but once you catch up on the deferred maintenance and fix the problems, you have something you know inside and out. Get a motor, drop it in, and drive on.

Thanks for the encouragement, I'll know more about whether it's worthwhile when I get my first quote tomorrow. That particular shop quoted $1100 TO INSTALL COILOVERS ON HER F30, so I will probably be calling around to other places first thing in the morning. I'm almost embarrassed to go back to my indy here in Saint Pete after I didn't heed their warning!

European Performance just quoted $7300 for a 74k miles engine with all the preventative stuff done MINUS THE WATER PUMP with a 12 month / 12k mile warranty.

There's no way I can justify that, I paid $7k for the car 3 months ago.

I just put in a call to Potter's (who was the original indy shop I used for VCG) but have yet to hear back.

That price sounds absurd to me, I don't think my 128i is worth much more....

ROFL - gtfo with that price.

With motor, I’m expecting 3k or so.

That's a crazy price. I used them once when we were in St. Pete, & was happy with the work but they are nearly dealer pricing. There is another shop in Largo called Team Motometrics. I never used them but they get good reviews.

Yea I thought that was pretty hilarious... I think maybe they weren't wanting to do it.

Potter's Precision Imports gave me a $5500 out the door quote with a 64k mile engine and all the preventatives done, 12 month, 12k mile warranty.

$3k was kinda where I was at too. Getting closer.

For anyone keeping score, Team Motometrics (thanks Gang), is at $4500 with 70k and the same 12 month / 12k with all preventatives including the water pump.

Maybe this is as close as I'm going to get?
