Rubbing and fender rolling.. A little more explanation?
Hey guys so its pretty obvious what rubbing is, but I just realized that due to not ever having replaced a stock wheel before, I really know nothing about where it occurs in our cars.
Would someone mind explaining? For instance, I'm considering 225/255 (18") star specs for my car on VMR VB3's and was told the rears could rub. Where exactly would it rub against? Also, what exactly is fender rolling and where do you roll it (where in the fender) I'm guessing answers to these questions change with each car and setup but for the sake of this thread let's begin with the setup I mentioned above for my 135 |

Rubbing issues generally happen on the outside, where the fender lip meets the side wall or shoulder of the tire.
Fender rolling is basically rolling the edge of the inside lip so it flattens out and provides additional clearance. -Charles@VMRWheels

As Charles said, rolling will give you more clearance, but it also provides a rolled/ rounded surface that will not damage the tire as much (compared to the sharp metal edge.) With an unrolled fender, over time the tire will show signs of wear, but it would take significant rubbing to have an issue with the sidewall. If you are lightly rubbing, the issue is more aesthetics as you will notice slight wear on the sidewall and burnt/ cracked paint. However, even with a "rolled" fender, you wheel/tire setup might be too aggressive and rubbing will still occur.
If you have significant rubbing you will look like my friend's R32. While you do not want to rub anywhere - IMO, it is a bigger issue if you are rubbing in the front as you could rip the fender's out if you hit a dip while turning. Also, as a rule of thumb, it is best to roll BEFORE you experience any rubbing to insure a nice clean roll... although a good shop can work wonders on some mangled fenders. You can rent fender rollers for a reasonable amount, but it's not for the faint of heart. You have to take your time and work the metal to do it right and insure a nice even roll, at least IME. You can also opt for the ghetto method which involves a wooden baseball bat. With either method (bat or roller) you need to heat to fenders with a heat gun to help prevent the paint from cracking. I am thinking of getting my fenders rolled so I can run some wider tires (235 front, 265 rear). What is the typical cost for getting fenders rolled? I know, different areas of the country and different shops charge different, but a ballpark figure would assist in my decision on whether to do this or not.
Oh and I plan on using either VMR VB3s or Apex ARC-8s in 18x8.5/18x9.5 in their usual offsets. So any suggested tires would be appreciated without too much threadjacking... I want to do this for the track (autoX) potential not for appearance sake.

I'm in Atlanta. I paid $75 per fender rolled.

Sojourn, there's a guy on the 335 side of this site in the S.E. forums that has his own roller and will help you do it. Most of us had ours done at the Marietta Butler Tire. They do a good job there.

rolled mine for $50 a side in the rear to fit 18x9.5 vmr vb3's, the roll stopped chewing the tire away but leaves a scuff mark now that is almost unnoticeable. Not sure if its hitting metal or the inner fender but it doesnt look to be doing any damage.
how in the world are people fitting 255's and 265's on these things? i've got yoko s drives in 245 and they rub...

225/255 Direzzas on stock rims = not a rub in the world for me. 235/265 Direzzas = only a slight rub front and rear. Slightly lowered, touch of negative camber added.

I have 15mm spacers on my stock 18x8.5 245 and it just clears at stock height. A 255 would be cutting it close, especially on a 19 which gives you a little taller sidewall. Here is a shot of my rear.. No rubbing with what is effectively 18x8.5 et 38 and OEM Tire Size (245) and suspension. Last edited by Duckles McGee; 04-27-2011 at 03:51 PM.. |

Butler in marietta hooked me up
I was thinking they would have "flattened" the fender more. How flat can they go? Took care of most of the rub but I still a a bit may need to flatten some more. Does anyone have before and after pics.

the yokohama s drives dont look stretched much but yes 245 is definitely small for a 9.5" wheel. I may get rid of the wheels and go back to stock so I can lower the car properly without modifying the fenders more. After rolling the fenders it touches but doesnt do any damage like it did before rolling.
i like the alufelgens but the deal i got on these wheels couldnt be matched by anything and i hear its a long wait to get them... whats the offset on the alufelgens?

I've had the wheels on for a week now, no rubbing issues so far and I've gone over some pretty rough roads in that time. That is with V710s 18x8.5 225 +45 front and 18x9.5 255 +50 rear.
