Strut spindle loosened up, damn

I snapped my drivers side sway bar end link when turning into my driveway today. I recently adjusted the front suspension and definitely tightened everything up when finished. The spindle bolt was loose enough that I could rotate the shock body by hand. The sleeve was stationary, but the threaded shock body rotated within the threaded sleeve. Either something settled, or the spindle bolt and nut was just worn out and didn’t hold. Fortunately it appears that the end link contacted the spindle nut rather than the shock body itself, so nothing else was damaged.

I have removed and reinstalled the spindle bolts 4 times over the years, and I think they need to be replaced. The nut has burrs to prevent slippage, but they probably weren’t holding as well as necessary to prevent loosening.

Soooo, I ordered adjustable end links from HP, and some new spindle bolts and nuts from local dealer. Interestingly, the parts guy said there is a note in the system to replace the spindle bolt and nut when replacing the right front strut, but not the left. I can testify that the left one should be replaced instead of reused, at least after 4 R+R’s.

Yes, when in doubt replace them. Some loc-tite will also help when doing re-assebly.
