Guys, it's all about higher revs AND forced induction! Imagine a N55 with forged internals, better head supporting 8000rpm redline, and a twin scroll turbo the size of the Garrett gt35 series of turbos. It would make amazing power even on relatively low boost levels. My main concern at this point is that they put the torque at the top where it should be, the N54 in stock form is no fun to rev out, a sports-car motor should be the opposite! Also, I don't have fun showing off my car, I have fun DRIVING, and that is ALL the M should be about. I want something I can take to Autocross, a road course, or a drag strip, have fun, and then drive it back home. Also to scott, tell them instead of crushing the development cars I will take them off of BMW's hands!

Looking good. I can wait to see how the new m1 will turn out. I wonder if its going to be a 2011 model or a 2012.

Looks funny with those FAT tires. I also like the way the hacked the front fender to make the wheel fit. Function over Form at this stage which is nice to see.

Now to purchase the M1 or M3 Coupe?????

You raise a great point about the N54 motor - it is great around town and quick little burst but it really dies out with higher RPM. That is why I had to go to an ESS Stage 2 Tune, Eisenmann 2x90 Race Exhaust, Stett FM Intercooler, and Dual Diverter Pipe. It really transformed the motor into that versatile track, autocross, dragstrip N54 you are looking for. That being said, you should not have to drop thousands of $ to achieve it on a $68k car. Maybe this 1M will solve those issues - I sure hope so.

was really hoping the M1 would be more exotic, more like the concept car or whater it was that was a tribute to the original M1. That "tribute" car would have been a direct competitor to Porsche and Audi R8... this one - not so much.

Ha, you're dreaming if you think they'll put a GT35 size turbo in there. An STi with it's 2.5L engine can make 500whp with a GT35, and even at 3.0L the N55 would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too laggy for the people on this forum. The fact that people on here complain about lag in an N54 makes me laugh.

When compared to a lot of turbo motors, the N54 is good. When compared to a NA motor making the same power.....it's not even close to the same kind of throttle response, especially during quick on-off-on throttle transitions in a corner.

I agree that slapping a turbo that big on a 3.0L isn't going to fit this car.

If you are looking for a very high-revving, light-weight diver’s car and you don’t mind lower HP I’d suggest the RX8. Best handling car I’ve driven. And no the engines don’t explode at 40k.

Another option although not as high-revving would be an Elise.

If they can lighten this new 1 series, improve the looks and the performance I think it will do well. 3300lbs and 350hp is nice but not amazing, I have that now with AWD and its good but doesn’t amaze me.

When the time arrives our intepretation of a supercar concept will not be as conventional as our competitors. It will be a BMW and a supercar that offers a different kind of approach. It will be fast , lightweight , accessible and powerful but it is a concept of efficiency and sustainability and will use the ideas created with the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept to make it stand out from the competition.

It will herald a new future for the segment.

SCOTT26,

Please tell me they will change the extremely ugly bug eyed head lights.. ;( Sometimes I look at my car and feel like kicking them in.
Not to mention, for a pricey lil' car...don't you think that they would be able to straighten the hood so that it is flush with the ugly bug eyes...I have yet to see 1 that fits flush...tells me quality was not great with our 1's very sad to see...

BMW has an engine called the S65 4.0 V8 that revs to 8,400 RPM

You should the paragraph that I quoted. He said other than the s65. That's na revs high and has over 350hp. 7k rpm is an insane redline for a 5L v8.

If you're going to have an attitude can you please fully verse yourself in both the question and the response?

No attitude here, paragraph didn't mention S65 or 8400 RPM. Ford has allot of work ahead, old technology can only go so far

What "old" technology would that be?
