The first time I saw a 1 I thought it was ugly. But the 1 is like a woman. The more you look at her and the more she does for you, you really start to like her. From certain angles, it's really an attractive car. Side profile is the worst, but the 3/4 view from the rear is best.
I think the 2 is attractive in a more generic BMW way, but I like the 1 better.

I actually love the side profile and think 3/4 from the FRONT is the best angle. I imagine everyone can agree that from the direct back, that's probably the worst angle. The 2 from the side seems to look almost identical to the 1, though I'm not sure why they integrated the door handle into the shoulder line. I prefer how ours look. So here are two lovely side shots of both my 1's. =) |

If only you guys could take a step back and read this thread. Sound like a bunch of teenagers high fiving each other about how much better you guys are than those 2 series owners. Those guys over on 2 forums are so delusional, comparing their car to the 1M...M badges blah blah blah.
As an outsider looking in, I see a bunch of new owners of the M235i excited about their car. I've seen plenty of critical comments from 2 owners, as well as much love. But more than anything I see a bunch of 1 series owners trying to rain on their parade...for no good reason. |

Well I think I recall reading the m235i put down a better lap time than the 1M on the ring. And for the first time, you can get this car optioned with a LSD from the performance catalog. But once the M2 comes out, there won't be any comparison for sure. I WILL SAY though the m235i RACE CAR is beautiful. 80k buys you a full fledged race car from BMW factory, fraction of the price of a Porsche Cup Car and I'm sure the maintenance and engine rebuilds will be far less costly as well. That's the only m235i I would really care for lol. |

This forum does take that to new heights. 128s versus 135s. 1-series versus 2 series. BMW owners have a reputation for being elitist snobs, could this be what's going on? I like cars. And I like people who like cars. Not that many of us left these days, as BMW's runflat obsession demonstrates. |

I think another cause for so much 1 series vs. 2 series argument is BMW marketing. They put so much fanfare into the 2-series launch, comparing it to the classic 2002 and so on...hardly touching on the fact that the 1-series also had these qualities - thus current 1-series owners may feel "overlooked". But this is marketing, they don't want to highlight how nice the car they just stopped selling is, they want to sell the new models. Back on topic....I definitely prefer the 1-series looks in almost every way to the 2. I've seen the 2 in person (but I haven't driven it so I'll refrain from commenting on that) and it's got a couple decent angles (side profile), but it generally just looks soft, and I really hate the rear end. Not to mention all the gizmos it comes with that I have a hard time stomaching in something that's supposed to be a more "pure" driving experience.

I am aware of what get flats can do. Have 245/35 X 275/30 Conti DW on my 335is. Out the factory door the 235 will out handle the 135. Change the tires on the 135 then change the tires on the 235 same outcome.
135IS is a secondary car so saw no need for get flat tires till the RFT die. 335is got new rubber at 1500 miles. FWIW the RFT on the 135 were better than the ones on the 335. You can add aftermarket parts, tires etc to anything to change its performance but generally the better the base you start with the better the results.. 235 is a better base than the 135.

Simply changing the tires on the 135i to the spec used on the M235i, in the front at least (PSS 225mm), makes a huge difference and serves to level the playing field a bit. The difference in front-end grip is pretty huge, even if this change alone doesn't serve to neutralize the car completely. It's not a matter of slapping slicks on the thing and claiming better skidpad numbers, rather it's giving the 135i the same 'shoes' as the M235i uses. I'd bet that, given 'similar' springs/dampers/tires, performance would be very similar. I don't think the M235i is necessarily the 'better' platform (from what I've read, alignment specifications are similar, I don't think it uses M-specified bushings, etc.), it's just configured in a more enthusiast-friendly way out of the box. |

Might not have M pieces, have no idea, but unless the engineers are brain dead a fresh chassis design will be better than one based on an 2004 model. Lots of things can change for the better in 10 years.

When I saw a 235i at the dealer, it seemed like the body shell of the car (especially the greenhouse) looked just like the 135i - it looked like they just changed the front and rear clips, but it was using the same structure. Now that I see the performance numbers are so similar, I'm thinking that may be exactly what they did? I haven't looked at any specifications, though (e.g. frame and interior dimensions), so maybe I'm wrong.

I think they've definitely upgraded the 2 in every way possible from the 1, there's no denying that. But at the end of the day, I prefer the 135 over the 235. I can definitely see how it's fun for each party to get under each other's skin, but let the 2 guys enjoy their new cars.
