Cooler upgrade - part 3

So, I decided to do what is likely the last cooler upgrade possible on my car without major modifications. While most will likely just go with one of the big cooler kits (ER, etc), I really like having my brake duct inlets so had upgraded first to two factory coolers. Then two 19 row Setrabs in Mosselman mounts. I also added a 13 row setrab as a supplemental trans cooler. All of these upgrades were driven by hitting temperature limits as I added performance and gained skill on the track over the past several years.

In this iteration I decided to leverage the Mosselman mounts. I figured I'd need to cutoff the bottom and then add L brackets to help support the taller 25 row coolers. This is, indeed what I did, but there were some challenges.

First, the Mosselman mounts are *hard* steel. It took some effort to dremel cut the bottom segment off and to drill new holes to mount the L-brackets. I think I used 5 cutting wheels per side.

Original Mosselman mounts.

Cut line on mount.

The second issue was the bolts than Mosselman used to mount the coolers. They are LONG. Interestingly, the holes under the "folds" on the Setrab coolers are threaded and Mosselman clearly leveraged that to secure the coolers in their mount. They also cut off the "ears", so I had to do that to the new coolers as well. The top inside bolt was a PITA. I didn't want to remove the headlights so ended up using a wrench and painstakingly extracted the bolt in 1/3 turn increments. I cut the bolts down for those spots for the reinstall.

PITA bolt.

Setrab bolt holes.

25 row fitup.

L brackets.

I wanted to retain the factory intake pieces but needed to cut them down so they exposed the whole 25 row cooler. This was fairly straghtforward and I decided to leverage the cut plastic and the old leftover drivers side "insert" pieces (before adding a cooler) to cut shapes that I could fit, ziptie together, and then use an epoxy to seal up the holes.

Final mounted setup.

The mount crosspiece does cut across the taller cooler, but it is minimally thick and is really needed for support IMO. I ended up painting the intake ducts black to make it look uniform.

I elected to cutout the oil cooler vents in the wheel arches and replace with grilles.

I also elected to add some zipties to support the extra weight, but probably not needed.

Finally, I changed out the 13 row for the 19 row trans cooler in front of the FMIC. The design of the mount for this is in a previous DCT cooler thread.

Looking forward to testing this out on my first track day on the 16th!

Looks, good. This is similar to how I originally mounted my Setrab, but ultimately the 275 front rubbed. I had since moved it down and forward into the vent opening and mounted it off the steel front bumper (zip ties temporary). I wanted to keep the stock brake ducting as well, but instead I am going to use silicone tubing to run cool air directly onto the rotors.

I am still stock on the wheel arches and bumper and can only fit 255s...but if I ever upgrade I am going to steal your idea!

I essentially copied the layout from the ADVAN kit.

Did you sell your driver side cooler already by chance?

Yes, Sorry. Gave the coolers to a friend.
