Are lights and key fob battery covered under service/warranty?

The trunk light has gone out in my car and I am getting a low battery for my keyfob sign on the dash when I start my car. Does BMW replace these under the 4 year/ 50,000 miles warranty or service plan or will they charge me in which case I can DIY?

Yes! They are covered by BMW.

The keyfob (I assume you have Comfort Access) is simple. Just go to radio shack and buy a couple of CR2032 lithium batteries for about $5 total and follow the installation instructions in your manual. They tend to last about 2 to 3 years.

Any reason why the Comfort Access version has replaceable batteries while the non-Comfort Access version has rechargeable batteries (recharged via the fob key slot)?

IIRC, BMW went to rechargeable remote batteries around 2001 and they continued with the adoption of the keyfob around 2006. But since CA fobs are seldom (if ever) inserted into the dash, there is no easy way for them to recharge.

Ah, that makes sense.

The price of convenience.
