Is the needle pointing almost straight down? If so, that's normal for me...75 - 80 mph to and from work. I start at a distance @home/work just far enough from the on ramp to have the motor oil warmed up almost to operating temp a few minutes after I'm in the fast lane.

With OEM oil cooler, I get oil temps of 130*C/266*F when I track my car.
When I come back into the pits, I never turn my N55 engine off and put the heater on with the side vents blowing hot air out of the window until oil temps of 110*C/230*F . Usually take about 3-5 minutes of running at idle, with heater on and hood opened. The N54 and N55 turbo engines get extremely hot when pushed. With that said, my N55 engine never got into the limp mode at the track, even on hot days. My engine oil breaks down and shears after about 8-10 track days. How I can tell that my oil is toast is that my N55 engine will start to consume oil. This happens after about 8-10 track days (digital gauge shows fractions of a quart/liter below full). Not a drop of oil is consumed before that point (digital gauge always shows full). So my cue is when my N55 starts to consume oil - at this oil breakdown stage, the used 0W40 Castrol "European Formula" oil comes out "water" thin.

I have an N54 and run about 240 on average.
On a side note, does having an aftermarket cooler help with a daily driven car that isn't tracked? I change my oil every 6000 miles or so. Thanks. |

I'd say it's normal. What's worth noting though is that with the new oil I just switched to, my engine is running 20 degrees F cooler than before. Used to avg around 240-250 regular driving and then 260+ hard. Now 220-230 regular and never crosses 250 degrees. OEM cooler setup.

I'm about 230-240 in the hottest days of the year sitting in traffic or driving spiritedly. Last year when there were a number of 100+ days I would get up to 250 sitting in traffic. I have the OEM oil cooler.

I haven't changed the oil yet, but was planning on using Mobil-1 (probably 5w30). Thanks!

I haven't checked the manual - anyone know what weight oil BMW recommends for the 135i (N55)? Was planning on using 5w-30 (live in Florida). Thanks!

You can use 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 or 5W-40. Make sure you use a LL-01 approved oil.

I've been using 5w-30 Mobile-1 for years in my previous car (2006 MX-5). That's what I plan on using in the 135i... is it "LL-01 approved"?

My oil constantly stays at 244F, and coolant is at 232F (+/- 3F for both).

If you haven't already, I strong suggest you purchase this. One of the best mods you can do to your car for the least amount of money. |

Oil temps stay low! Even on the hottest of NY summer days in 90 degrees weather, my temps never see past 240. Last edited by ..; 08-31-2014 at 07:57 AM.. |
