comfort access issues
I have had my 135 for around 3200 miles now and have encountered my first issue. Comfort access is acting up. It will ONLY work if you are making contact with the key fob....if its in your pocket and you try to open or lock the doors or trunk you may have to try 5-8 times before it will open or lock......if i stick my hand in my pocket and just am making physical contact with the fob ( not pushing any buttons) it works as it should and opens or locks the doors or trunk every time. The car ALWAYS starts without touching the fob but will ocationally remote that the fob is not in the car for a breif time (15-30 secs). it does it with BOTH fobs and I replaced the battery in one to test. Also when it is acting up if you push the unlock or lock button on the fob itself it does not work. I have a appointment at the dealer mnday to have it looked at.

Murphy's law - the more things you have on a car, the higher the probability something will eventually go wrong. Sounds like something that your dealer will have to fix. Let us know what transpires. Maybe this forum will be a good place to log things that go wrong on the 1 series.

I have had the same problem, but the dealer is tackling the bigger issues with mine right now, they may be able to to fix this with a software patch by increasing the transmitter power on the 125 kHz RFID unit (in the car).

We were told with our 335i, that ever so often you need to stick the fob in the switch while we are going for a long drive. It will re-famliarize (sp) the fob with the car and also charge it. The wife does it about once every month or so.

As Lester suggests, a dedicated thread (or series) on 128i/135i QA issues (and dealer fixes) would be a useful addition here. It is a 'given' that the first year of the 1 Series is going to introduce a bit of a learning curve for owners & dealers.

As for re-familiarization, oscillators can frequency shift, but most are locked to intrinsic characteristics of the materials. I would expect that the engineers at Siemens who designed this system know about these behaviors and have allowed for them in the design. No receiver has ideal filters on it that will pass only the frequency it is designed for. Lastly, if the system needs to be refreshed periodically it should be stated so in the manual, so as far as I am concerned it is a design fault that needs to be fixed. This is a convenience feature - convenience and maintenance do not go well together. Kyle |

I'm going in on thursday for the whole, both keys dont work for unlocking the doors, if you try to use the FOB buttons while it is acting up the doors wont unlock/lock, and the key works fine when inside the vehicle. It worked PERFECTLY when I first got the car, but literally a week later it started spazing out. So, in two days they are going to look at it. I feel your pain, I paid 500 bucks for a CA that is definately not living up to its name. :sob:

Ugh, please keep us updated as to the outcome. I think all of us with CA are interested in keeping up with this.

Interesting note though: Who here has gotten their windows tinted? I have, and I just realized that this problem started happening since I got my windows tinted, so is there a way that the tint is interfering or weakening the signal? I seriously doubt that the geniuses at bmw would not make this without taking tinting into account, but I just thought that is noteworthy!

I think he was asking, was it ceramic or was it metallic?

Did CA stop working only after the ceramic tinting?

Mine is ceramic, but you would think bmw would plan on the whole tint thing, as 80 percent of the owners would be getting their windows tinted, but I'm glad I brought this up. I did not notice my CA start fumbling up until after I got my windows tinted. I think we may be on to something. Because, If the key is in plain site ie. not in any pocket and in hand, the CA works about 95% of the time, however the trunk still has a 5% chance of working. Although, this would explain why the key has a 100% ratio of letting the keyless start work :/ I am taking mine in on thursday, I am hoping there may be an antenna booster or something of the sort if the tinting is in fact the problem.

Tint is not the problem :/ had same failure rate with the windows down as up. BUT, with the remote out of the pocket it has a significant increase in success. However, I did not pay 500 bucks for something that has to be out of my pocket to work.

Apparently, some 3 -series owners who had CA seemed to get issues when using metallic tints, but those with ceramic tints seemed to be problem free:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23706 I am planning to take my car in for ceramic tinting very soon, and would love to find out as much as I can about the possibility that tinting may affect the operational effectiveness of CA. As far as documentation goes, the Formula One Ceramic Tint website's write "The advanced technology utilized in manufacturing the Pinnacle Series provides a proprietary non-metallized, non-conductive, ceramic technology film with maximum heat reduction, maximum ultraviolet rejection, excellent optical clarity and blockage of infrared rays." The site also says: No hindrance to vehicle electronic systemsWill not interfere with radio frequencies I guess, I am hoping the claims are right.

On that post people who used metallic said that they had no problems either. They may just be playing on the fear of interference to get you to buy ceramic. Although, it is worth it. But I'm just saying.
