Hi Guys,

This is my first car and I don't know much about tires yet. Still learning....

I got my 135i (sport package) off a lease and needed to change the tires to new summer tires.

The tires I needed were.

215/40R18 (Front)
245/35R18 (Back)

I went to the store and they didn't have my exact sizes. So these are the tires the put on for me.

215/35R18 (Front)
255/35R18 (Back)

These tires are not run flats.

Is this going to be a problem for me. The guy at the store told me to stay away from pot holes because of the fronts are lower profile. I have these on the original rims and now I am really concerned about damaging the front rims.

Can someone please tell me if I am being paranoid or not?

1) You should always check with your 1Addict pals before letting strangers mess with your car.
2) You should never let said strangers replace your parts with lesser products. The fact that they even offered to put smaller tire on your wheel (presumably because it's what they had in stock) suggests they do not have your interests in mind. I would insist that they either get you the minimum size tire (stock) or a plus 1 which would be a 225/40. That would actually be better as a summer tire.

The non RFTs will be kinder to your rims then RFTs would have been, but I would still try and avoid big potholes.

I've bent both of my front rims (one of them twice) and a rear rim because of unavoidable potholes in NYC, which were never a problem for my e92 on 225/45R17 RFTs. I'm on stock 135i rims btw.

In short you will be fine, but here are the differences.


The front are 0.9" or 22mm shorter, or 75mm sidewall instead of 86mm stock.... Stay away from those potholes!!!

[I actually run 17's with a 100mm sidewall because of all the potholes around by me]

The rears are very close to stock, 89mm sidewall instead of 86mm stock. also the wider profile may help you stay off the curbs and prevent wheel rash.

big difference is the front to rear diameter difference now, which is 28mm, or a 37 revolutions/mi. This won't be a real problem, but it is a difference.

Your front tire is now 1" shorter than it should be. Not a good match.

hmm...i was afraid this was gonna get me into trouble....i just had to change tires as i was still running winters

so I called the store where I got the tires and the guy over there was nice enough to tell me to go back and he said he will change the tires for free....he was very nice about it...

so just to confirm with you guys...i should get 225/40R18 for the front on my stock rims? right?

i have the 255/35R18 on the back on my stock rims now.

Correct F:225/40 R:255/35 are a perfect match. Also a tire rack recommended setup (Look at the FAQ sections Gill stickied at the top of the Forum)
