calling all 6MT SSK guys...

Hi Gang,

So the other day I got borded and decided to measure my stock 2010 (N54) 135i 6MT gear lever throws. I measured the throws from 3rd - N - 4th, gears. I measured at the bottom of the shift lever at the silver ring/M-shifter.

The throws from 3rd to 4th - comes out to exactly 8 cms. Or 3.14 inches.

I would like people who have a SSK to measure their throws and post the results. BMW Perf, UUC, B&M, ect...

I would also like someone with a N55 to measure their throws so we can confirm that the N55's have a shorter shifter.

TIA,
Dackel

Ok, Thanks egainer.

2.75 inches times 2.54cm is 69.8mm or 6.98 cms.

So my N54 was at 80mm. I was thinking the difference would have been more. Thanks though. Lets keep this thread going!

Off topic but am i the only one who dislikes the amount of gear resistance there is when shifting? My 81' delorean and 86' 325e both have very little shifter resistance despite enormously long throws.

It gets better with miles. At first, the shifter is really tight. Many people have said it takes 10K miles before it starts to feel silky. My car has about 12K on it now. Even that said, my 1st/2nd shifts feel a bit notchy still. BUT WAY better than when it was brand new!

Another thing.... have you done the CDV mod? You really should. Go look under the DIY CDV delete for it.

Yea Ive done it and think its great... feals like a new tranny.. Love it. that fu!@ing CDV is one of those things that makes me pull my hair out: NO DIPSTICK/ NO Key for trunk/CDV. To me those are the big three.

On my car, the CDV delete helped a little, but a clutch stop helped a lot. I felt ridiculous paying $20 for a screw, but I love the improvement it made.

About SSK's, when I first looked at them, the BMW SSK was too expensive, so I tried B&M. The B&M SSK has very short throws, but it was too sticky shifting in and out of 2nd - I hated shifting 2-3. Then Tischer cut the price for the BMW SSK, so I replaced the B&M. The BMW SSK has throws a little longer than I'd like, but it isn't sticky in any gear, so I'm happy.

I have an 08 with the BMW SSK, but I'm not sure how you are measuring this.

At what point on the shift lever are you measuring the throw? In the first set of pictures they appear to be directly above and it looks like you can see about 80mm of travel at the cross line of the shift pattern on the top of the knob. Are you eye-balling it from that point? If so, not only is it tough to be accurate, but the height of the shift knob comes into play. (The BMW SSK comes with a shorter shift knob as well, so the throws will measure shorter at the top than if the SSK is used with the stock knob.)

The only alternative I can think of is to measure at the level of the tape stretched across the boot, but then what do you use as a reference point on the lever? The seams on the boot move relative to the lever and cover it at that height, so you would have to remove the leather boot and place a reference mark on the shift lever at the chosen height.

The "shortening" claims I've seen for SSKs range from 8% to about 25%, and we are talking numbers of less than 3" (much less as you move down from the top of the lever), so it is going to take some pretty exact measurements.

I would guess that the above comparison is pretty good as it looks like both have the same knob (looks can be deceiving, though) and measured at the same point. But to take it any further you need to standardize the measurement and take the "knob height" out of it.

I measured the throws from 3rd - neutral - 4th gears. I used the edge of the silver collar on the shifter for reference. I found that by putting the measuring tape under the armrest area... and then just taking note of the position of the shifter & the measuring tape.

I would like to know what an N54 with a Perf SSK does.

My stock N54 throws are 80mm.
A stock N55 throws are 70 mm.

PLEASE report back!

Well I tried, but I really don't understand where on the shaft you're measuring. I laid the ruler across just as you did. Measuring where the shaft touches the ruler, I measured 40-45mm from 3rd to 4th.

That seemed way too short compared to your 80mm, so I tried eyeballing the position of the bottom of the silver ring. That way, it looked like 50-55mm.

Sorry, that's the best I can do, except to say that, from looking at egainer's pics, I can promise that my SSK's throws are much shorter.

It does not matter WHERE you measure from... just be consisitant. I used the back edge of the silver ring. I kept the measuring tape secured by placing it under the arm rest. As long as the measuring tape stays still... and you measure from the same refference point. You are good to go!

The distance from 3rd to 4th at the level of my ruler laid across the flattened boot is 40-45mm. I can't measure it more precisely because of the boot flopping around. (I have more excess boot than you because my lever is shorter.) But I don't believe my SSK really has 40-50% shorter throws than stock. It's more like 25% shorter.

Anyway, I have to admit, I'm glad to see that davemohan is confused in exactly the same way I am.

BMW Perf SSK - N54

Best measurement I could get for you with the BMW SSK.

3rd to 4th throw distance measured from center of silver ring (I kept the //M gear knob and boot) was [7.125 - 5.125] = 2 inches

Seems that's about 50mm or so.

BTW: From my first gear change with it installed it was really, really noticeable.
